Number of Walmarts in a county correlates strongly with the number of hate groups

I'm surprised no one mentioned this study:
http://www.livescience.com/19660-big-box-hate-groups.html?utm_source=feedburner
Portion of the article:
According to the study by professors at Penn State University, New Mexico State University and Michigan State University, the number of Wal-Mart stores in a county correlates significantly with the number of hate groups in the area.
The amount of Wal-Mart stores in a county was more statistically significant than other factors commonly regarded as important to hate group participation, such as the unemployment rate, high crime rates and low education, the research found...

"Wal-Mart has clearly done good things in these communities, especially in terms of lowering prices," said Stephan Goetz, a Penn State University professor who also serves as the director of the Northeast Regional Center for Rural Development. "But there may be indirect costs that are not as obvious as other effects."

A key factor is that many local merchants are forced out of business after finding it difficult to compete against large retailers, according to the study.
Local business owners are typically members of community and civic groups, such as the Kiwanis and Rotary clubs, which help establish programs promoting civic engagement and fostering community values. Goetz said losing members of such groups may cause a drop in community cohesion.
"While we like to think of American society as being largely classless, merchants and bankers are part of what we could call a leadership class in a community," Goetz said.
My county: Zero Walmarts, zero Best Buys, zero Home Depots, zero Lowes,..
It'll be easier to list the box stores in my county: Kmart. Tractor Supply. Autozone. The end. 🙂

I think we have 3 Walmarts. I don't know what that means though. The KKK activity is one county north. That's the only "hate group" I'm aware of.

I also hear that beastiality is are highly correlated to the number of goats one owns.

Of course we could fall back on that old adage that correlation is not causality...

Edit: Wow, beaten to it by Barfo.

Rural, right-leaning folk LOVE walmart

Its not that we "love" walmart, its that walmart is about the only place to shop around here.

As for the OP, walmart has a hidden cost not only to the community, but to society as a whole. walmart pays their employees just low enough so that a lot of people that work for walmart can also draw social benefits.

Not only does walmart drive small businesses out of business, the walmart pay scale is very low. How many people do you see working at walmart that bought a new car or truck? How many people that work at walmart buy a home?

The article in the OP is rather interesting as to how driving small businesses out of town has rather long term social impacts.

Not surprised. Walmart is a magnet for stupid douchebags.
"Aw man, are you serious? We got <people> living in this town? Well dang it, I didn't know that!"

Walmart: Bringing people together.
:hmm:

For instance, people may be less likely to shoplift at a local hardware store if they know the owner personally.
Yes, the good old tribal mentality.

Another flawed study!

Well, DUH! More Wal-Marts mean larger population.
Larger population means likelihood of more hate groups.
Capiche?

You mean like hate groups who want to smear Walmart by hinting that they are related to hate groups?

This passes for science? No wonder there's no consensus on global warming. 🙄

Well, of course! I just thought it was amusing to point out the story.

So professors at 3 different universities thought this was something worth doing a study on? And people still respect degrees from these places😕

When I walk through a walmart I am still amazed at people shopping at the store. All I see when I go there is overpriced junk. They still sell HDMI cables for $50 and USB cables for $20.
