Number of processes in WinXP

I have anywhere from 18 to 20 processes running in WindowsXP when there are no programs running. Is this a good number or is that too many for optimal performance?
 
Sounds normal; fresh install I presume?

I've got an install that's over a year old now - 38 processes currently running here.
