It they hadn't banned DDT because it was 'teh debil' Malaria would be long gone in africa.

So they are spending all this money to save millions of African children in poor, 3rd world villiages, so they can experience a few more years of poverty and despair before dying from starvation? Sign me up!

They reported this in the local evening news tonight... the first thought that came to my mind was, wouldnt this create an inbalance in the natural ecosystem? I am sure mosquitos play their part in the whole cycle of things too, and wont be good if they just completely die off...

i saw on discovery they are using the same technique on trying to get rid of the kind of flies that lay flesh eating maggots (screwworm?) from somewhere

hope it works

The problem is that it doesen't end there.

What about the things that eat the frogs?

There must be some breakpoint. Everything, despite what some like to believe, is not completely dependant on everything else. It's a logical fallacy. The frogs eat more than one kind of insect, the things that eat frogs eat more than one animal, etc. Ultimately, there may be a small impact, but not as big of one as some would like to believe.

Junkscience is a HORRENDOUS ASTROTURF website. It like linking to the Marlboro website for non biased information on cigarettes.

DDT and its derative DDE have been linked to breast cancer in many studies. I'm sure Africans would all love to have a mosquito free zone provided they all succumb to cancer...

Read Silent Spring.

The DDT was banned mainly because the insects started to develop resistance to it. (and of course, the DDT is toxic and have very long decomposition times, so it can affect other animals in the food chain).

That was my thought too. I don't mean to sound like a heartless bastard, but the population of Africa is way over what their nations can support. Malaria is helping keep the numbers in check.
