Nuevo Laredo or Piedras Negras (Mexico)?

So, I just realized that I live pretty close to Mexico but have never actually driven over there. I looked on a map and Nuevo Laredo is 3.5 hours away and Piedras Negras is 4 hours away. Being that I've never been to either of these, I was wondering which would be a better place to visit. I've heard terrifying things about Nuevo Laredo so I'm not so sure about going there. Would really like to drive further into Mexico to maybe Monterrey or somewhere neat like that, but I'm not sure how far that is and I know nothing about the roads, etc. around there.

Any input is most appreciated 🙂

Never been to Piedras Negras, but Nuevo Laredo is NOT worthing driving 3.5 hours to visit. It's a typical Mexican/US border town. Lots of bars, brothels and pharmacies selling generic drugs of dubious quality. If you're already in Laredo and want to pop over the border when the bars close on the US side that's fine. If you're making a special trip expecting it to be something interesting prepare to be sorely disappointed.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. I'm thinking that Piedras Negras would be a better choice, even though it's a little more of a drive. It's much smaller and seems a lot safer.

Do a google news search for Nuevo Laredo. Go look through a few pages and you'll see what its famous for. IIRC, the last 3 police chiefs were murdered by gangs.
