When I was swapping out the cooler, decided to slap this unlockable bad boy on my scanner for a photo session without heatsink nor compound. The Compound was some dark grey medium density paste, perhaps Shin Etsu (SP)? Whatever it was, very nice application and the OEM heatsink made good contact.

Also wanted to mention that I pulled apart my new PNY 6600GT PCIe for the same cooler swap action and it also had compound, some thin white stuff, but was making good contact. Just wanted to mention that since there are reports of some 6600GT cards coming with improperly attached heatsinks.
