Nuclear war: A what-if thread

I was wondering...

What would the worldwide political consequences be if the United States nuked France (unprovoked) on the president's orders?

For the purposes of this discussion, lets assume that the entire US Military is ready and willing to fight to the end to defend el presidente from anyone trying to come pick him up for a warcrimes trial, and that congress is 100% behind el presidente's decision, as well as public opinion shooting up to about 99% after France's destruction. Let us also assume that nobody fired a counter volley, thus setting off the destruction of the world.

I'd want to be part of the people in the select lottery who get to live underground for many years to come... I think THAT would be a cool experience.

War crimes?

No country has the balls to try and get 'el presidente' for anything. If they do, they're dead. This would never happen.

The amount of vicious terrorist attacks against Americans and those things perceived as representing American interests in the world would skyrocket.

Canada and Mexico would have a VERY difficult time and would probably bow to European pressure to cut us off. The ENTIRE WORLD would turn on us. France is loved more deeply in the rest of the worl than we are.

we'd totally screw ourselves...even with our military might and natural resources we couldn't come out the victor in a war like that.

Canada hates France too. Just ask a (non-french) Canadian. And I guess Nike would have to find a new place to make shoes. We could actually do for a 20 foot wall on the Mexican border, ya know?

What about economic impact? How would the rest of the world carry on in the computing age without key American companies? The only CPU manufacturer of note outside the US is VIA.

That kind of argument is why I think that there would be a great deal of clandestine action against the US (Terrorism, etc.) but no organized government would lift a finger.

FYI: France has nuclear weapons

After the last two wars they may be a little quick on the trigger if threatened.

Quick to surrender too.
The more wars France fights, the quicker they surrender.

Geez, way to go. Kill the folks who gave you your beloved Statue of Liberty.
Edit: And Canada doesn't hate France or anyone else. We ARE a neutral country, and one of the largest nuclear powers.

Bush: France is supporting terrorism and uh, uh, we uh need to uh nuke m. Also, France is hiding all the WMD that was supposed to be in Iraq so uh we uh need to uh nuke m.

Republicans: NUKE FRANCE! NUKE FRANCE! NUKE FRANCE! THOSE DMN TERRORISTS DESERVE TO DIE!!! NUKE FRANCE!

EDIT: Afermath -

BUSH: Well, we may not have found any Iraqi WMDs in France and have no proof of um, uh, um proof of terrorist ties, but we got rid of france, they were evil, that's a good thing isn't it?

Republicans: YEAHHHHH!!! VOTE FOR BUSH!!!

How many CPU companies do you think would be left with a market of 250 million ppl vs 5 billion ppl? VIA would pwn!
