I don't know if anyone mentioned this yet, but here are some stats about France from last year (from here):

[*]France derives 75% of its electricity from nuclear energy. This is due to a long-standing policy to promote energy independence.
[*]France is the world's largest net exporter of electricity, and earns some US$2 billion annually from this.

Here's a chart showing the cost per mWh for electricity from different sources. Nuclear is about as cheap as coal.

Yes, there is that little problem of what to do with the waste. But, what's wrong with burying deep inside a mountain on gov't land in the middle of Nevada? No one is EVER going to live there anyway.

Well......I live about 30 miles East & Downstream of the Callaway Ameren U.E. plant. It uses the Missouri River to get it's water for cooling purposes.

It doesn't bother me in the least! In fact.......the "green glow" the fish now have in the Missouri River have made it much easier for the guys whom go "fish gigging" at night and honestly......there aren't THAT many people around here with tails or third eyes and they're pretty much used to it now.............;););) LOL!:)

Seriously though, this plant was opened in '82 I believe and it created a lot of jobs and widfalls in $$$$ for local school districts!:) I'm sure something awful "could" occur, but, the plants saftey record is impecable and the people don't seem to worry about it at all anymore..........
