NYT Article This is a pretty interesting, and somewhat frightening article assessing the threat of nuclear terrorism.

I guess here in Denver I'm "relatively safe" from ship-bound nukes, anyway... ummm... maybe. :(

The most frightening thing about it all is the assumption has changed from it can't happen to when and where will it happen.

I think I had a nuclear nightmare.

I dreamt that a nuke went off in my neighborhood but I had a superpower that made time incredibly slow, so I was able to outrun the blast. Don't know what happened to everybody else though.

I'm surpried that more people aren't interested in this subject. The odds are pretty good that a nuke of some sort will be exploded in the US within the next ten years. Is the lack of interest based on the fact that there really isn't much we can do about it.?

Yakko, no one gives a flip that the you just discovered the NYT's site requires registration. Everyone with a brain already knows that. Oh I forgot, you got another postcount with that little bit of keyboard diarrhea.

bandXtrb, drugs are bad, try cutting back.

Nukes being used in the U.S? Possibly, but they will be more along the lines of a dirty bomb and not a massive 10 megaton blast or anything. If it does happen all I can say is God help the country the terrorists come from. I have a feeling most of the Middle East would be shiny glowing glass after we got finished exacting our revenge.

That's the problem isn't it. How do you identify what country the terrorists came from? Even if you do, can you retaliate against a country that is possibly an ally even though the terrorists came from there?

Many of the terrorists of 9-11 came from Egypt and SA, we have retaliated against those countries and shouldn't unless it is proven that the government of those countries were involved in the attacks.

The problem here is that given patience and money, there is nothing that cant be done. Sorry, but a few clever individuals can pretty much do what they want if they are determined and smart. Gonna frisk everyone down? Check every trunk, van, suitcase before it enters a major city? Detectors? I can get around that. They can too.

So what to do? Nothing practical. Depopulate cities, telecommute, live underground. That is a start. Will anyone do this? Nope. As far as attacking a foreign country, who do you go after? Lift prints from a detonated bomb? Some say the truth will come out, but US citizens will cry out for blood before then. Anyones. Doesnt have to be who did it, but who we think OUGHT to have done it. In any case, suppose I were a domestic terrorist (no I am not) and decided to leave some clues pointing to an Arab state? We nuke the Arabs. Oops.

This is like living in the midwest. You know a tornado is going to wipe out your house one day. Could be in 1 day or 50 years, so life goes on. This is how I think Americans are responding psychologically

I studied all of this in school and there are many options and routes that can be taken.

Ok, for sake of argument I plan to do this. How will you stop me?

As a general note about the NYtimes website, I joined ages ago and the spam from them is very, very low.

It is a great news site with very high quality articles.

I would close the borders immediatly to all planes, ship and boat traffic and freeze all shipping in and out of the country. I would then use radiation dectection helocopters to screen the shipping.

The main problem for terrorists, according to this article, is not getting a bomb into the country, but more importantly, getting a bomb at all. Actually making a bomb is an "easy" task (easy being a relative term; I doubt Hayabusrider could do it by himself in his basement), but acquiring the materials to create one is the big obstacle.

And yes, the article looks extensively at the idea of terrorists using a dirty bomb or even compromising a nuclear power plant.

Well I hope you're not serious. If you are I have a suggestion. Go back to school and not to the same one you've been going to.
