NTVDM error in Win2k

Hey, I'm not sure if anyone has encountered this, but I sometimes get an NTVDM.EXE error when i try to execute self-extracting executables. It comes and goes, and I have no idea what's causing it. I had the same problem a few months ago and managed to solve it by creating a new admin account.
Here's my system:
Win2k w/SP2
Dual P-III 700s running at 1050MHz
ABIT VP-6
1GB RAM
Elsa Gladiac Geforce2 GTS
Hauppauge winTV Theater
SB Live Value
Hollywood Plus DVD decoder
3com network card

Thanks for your help!
