ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt

I am getting an error on startup that says that the ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt, can I just re-install the operating system without losing the rest of the data on my drive?

There are a couple of ways to fix this, but the easiest is to run a repair from the Windows 2000 CD.

Pop it in and boot from it. It will look like it's starting a new install, but it isnt. Wait for it to load up the initial files, and you will see an option to hit R for repair. Do this and select the automatic repair option. Don't worry about not having Emergency Repair Disks, just continue through the choices.

This wont harm your original data.

Thats odd, I got the same EXACT error when I tried booting my computer up this morning. I left it off for a few hours and when I came back it was working fine again. Weird.

i would recommend not doing the automatic repair and do the manual one instead, just replace the specified file when that one pops up and only that one. i would try that first before doing automatic repair which replaces a ton of files. just to be safe.
