I'm still trying to get win2k installed on my laptop with no removable drives or usb or lan or anything. I can put files on it using a 2.5" ide to 3.5" converter though.

I made one fat32 partition (C:) on the drive and installed win98 on it so I can boot into dos (using F8 > command line on startup). I copied the win2k cd to a folder on that partition. so I booted into dos and ran i386/winnt.exe to install win2k on a seperate NTFS partition (D:)

I installed drivers and everything went smoothly. but then I deleted the fat32 partition with win2k CD files on it and rebooted and it said "ntldr missing".

any ideas?

Yep. Totally expected.

Copy ntldr, ntdetect.com, and boot.ini to the NTFS partiton, mark the NTFS partition active in disk manager, and edit the boot.ini with the correct ARC path.

You can get into the OS by booting to a floppy that's formatted under W2K (not a quick format) and has those three files on it.

i thought he didn't even have a floppy drive .

is win2000 fairly easy about dealing with hardware changes like XP ?( never used it ) could you try installing on the comp with the converter and then move the drive to the laptop and let it redetect the hardware ?
if the mb on the comp and the one on the laptop use a similar chipset intel , via , sis , ect it might not care too much.
good luck

yeah I see it - "disk management", but there's nothing about making a partition "active"

also where is boot.ini? It's nowhere on the drive I installed win2k on

in the lower right window right click on the partion you want to work on . it should give you some options.
for the boot.ini file , do you have file views set to show protected operating system files ?
good luck
