"NTLDR is missing" Trying to setup system for the 1st time.

Shuttle MK40VN / VIA KM400 Chipset
Maxtor DiamondMax 98196h8
Pioneer DVR-104

Jumper on "j50' Master/Slave ping on Maxtor HDD. Setup for master.

Jumper on 2nd vertical pins "slot" from left... setup for slave on the Pioneer DVR.

Stick a windows XP disc in the tray.... loads up to:

NTLDR is missing
CTRL+ALT+DEL for restart

Not really sure what to set everything to in the BIOS.... I put the 1st boot device as "user" and it has all the correct HDD info so I guess that it?!?!? The bios is very different and illogical compared to bios setups screens I have dealt with in the past. I do auto-detect ont he settings.... same bullshit pops up.

Anyone know a solution to this?

It looks like you are trying to boot from your HD as opposed to your optical drive. Since you are trying to set up XP for the first time, that would mean your boot device should be the PVR drive, not the HDD. The OS has to boot from the CD to get the install program loaded into memory, and then transfer the system files to your boot partition.

Check your bios and make sure your boot sequence starts first with the optical drive.

looks like ur trying to boot to a corrupted xp copy, its possible that the cd itself has ntldr corrupted, but thats pretty unlikely, check to ensure that you are booting to the correct drive

I press f8 and specifically select the optical drive as the boot device. I see all the usual bootup sequence stuff.. IRQs, Drives, CPU clockrate, etc... @ the bottom line it says searching for OS loading files or somethin like that and then the same "NTLDR is missing" error message pops up.

But you see... all my Ubuntu CDs load up fine? Neither my Win2k or WinXP discs load up..... both giving the same error. Also, the HDD that I am trying to install too was formatted in WINXP (on the computer im using now.

Oh yeah, I also did change the boot sequence anyways.... any other ideas?

Then press the space bar.

hehe I tried 2 different windows discs....

but forget it, I just installed Ubuntu and will stick with that.

Frankly I get sick of dealin with some issues. I just want my computer to work, no hassles, but odd issues always seem to come up and I don't want to deal with 'em.
