NTLDR error

When I try to boot my XP home laptop I get the error "NTLDR is compresssed". I tried to boot from my windows CD and Barts PE cd, but it hangs after displaying " ....is checking your hardware configuration".

I cannot boot in safe mode either... Any solutions..TIA...

Already tried that.... unfortunately my laptop does not boot up with cd-rom drive (I have already checked the boot order)... any suggestions....
 
Boot from you windows xp install cd, select recovery console, log into the windows that it lists, cd \ press enter, copy ntldr ntldr.old , del ntldr, cd d: (or whatever drive letter is your cd)
cd i386, copy ntldr c:\, exit and reboot.
 
dahak, I dont think he can boot from cd.

ntldr (nt loader) is the boot loader windows xp uses. Its stored in the mbr. (master boot record)

Never received an error about it being compressed but my friend's ntldr became corrupted (it was his mft really but I'm trying to keep this simple) at one point. To fix this all I did was overwrite the mbr using a linux installer cd. Try downloading the latest version of ubuntu and installing it (making sure to install grub in the mbr), afterwards you can either keep ubuntu or just reformat and install windows xp again.

Thanks Skitzer, Dahak, cynicist... Yah I cannot boot from CD..

Cynicist I would like try your method... I also had left 5 GB of space (without any OS) to install linux (which I never did). Is it possible to install unbuntu to that partition so that I can keep using my XP.
