NTFS questions

Hey all,

Quick couple of questions about NTFS.

1) If i have two fat32 partitions right now, one c: and the other d:, and i format c: and convert it to ntfs, is it going to mess up my d: partition?

2) What are some of the benefits of NTFS? Ive used it before (like back in nt4 days) but my honest question is, should i really change from fat32?

Thanks ahead of time

It is amazing you have been here this long and have not learned about the search feature. Let me break it down for you 🙂

Click Here! <<--That link will take you to the "Advanced Search" area. Once there you will be able to search on key words (ie NTFS) and read threads containing those words. You may even specify which forum you would like to search in (ie Operating Systems). You may also break down the search by date, or current messages or messages older than 45 days. Now imagine if that feature (and yes, it is a feature despite the fact it runs on a Microsoft Windows machine) was utilized instead of people posting and re-posting the same thread.

For instance, I could take a load off of the servers by searching for information on NTFS. I selected the Currernt Messages, and the Operating Systems forum. Within 5 seconds (yes, it took a while for the page to load), I was given a page of probably 30+ threads on NTFS. Granted, not every one would answer the questions you have, but I know for a fact your questions are not unique. In fact, I have helped answer them before on MANY occassions. Since I do not use Windows, when I have a choice, that is amazing. Most of the knowledge I have about NTFS was gathered reading here and other places. So I recommend you do the same thing and save Anand some money, and the admins some time.

Put less stress on the servers, search for information before posting a topic for the 3rd time this week! Thank you.

EDIT: extra characters are a Bad Thing [TM]

I was reading up on it as i read the message you typed....

My question #1 was pertaining to some of the storied i had heard about the xp changing the mbr on a conversion, and screwing other partitions up... And i still havent found a clear answer on it.

#2 im answering by some of the finely written FAQs on anandtech 🙂 It was more of an opinion question than anything

I do see what ya meen though. Some of the question asked this week have been kinda redundant

I hope you werent offended at my post. I found it humorous (but Im a wierd type of person 😛 ).

1. It shouldnt, but you make proper backups so if it does it is an annoyance instead of a disaster right? 😉
2. security, stability, and sometimes speed.

no, i totally wasnt offended. Quite understanding.

Thank you for your help on that.

Im pretty good on regular backups of critical files, but when you are sitting on a second partition of nearly 20 gigs, well, its kinda time consuming to back all that up to cd ;-)

Trust me, I understand. My backups have gotten fewer and fewer the more I download. But 90% of my unbacked up stuff is reproducable, and the 10% that isnt is useless crap 🙂
