i bought a quantum 6.4 se hard drive w/ win2k already installed and i want to load Me/win98se
my problem is that i can not get the bios to recognize drive as primary dirve, it is only regonized on the slave / cable select setting and even then i get a MBR(master boot record) not found or not a system disk error. I think it is in NTFS format.

i cannot reformat the drive using a HD utility (i.e Maxtor, wd).
do i need ghost to delete the ntfs partition or a low level format app to restore the MBR.

thnk

Have you tried using a Win98 boot disk to boot from, then using FDISK to delete the NTFS partition? After you've deleted the NTFS partitions, format the unpartitioned space as a FAT32 drive using FDISK. Hope this helps.

If the BIOS isn't recognizing it as a primary drive, try adjusting the jumpers on the HD.

i have tried the win98 bootdisk but i get no active partitions found error.i get the same message when i boot of win2k cd.

the previous owner of the drive had similar problem. He could not "erase" it and that win2k was "stuck" on it.

its only recognized if i have it set as secondary slave after the zip drive as secondary master and the cd rom as primary master.

it will not work by itself on any jumper setting
i have also tried different cables. There is nothing physically wrong with it.
