I'm not convinced it is a virus. Is this Hard Drive loaded with the OS from a previous setup? Sounds more like a conflict between MB/chipsets than anything else. You might be looking to do a fresh install.

You can get that with misconfigured BIOS also.
Try running memtest86 first. Run it for 10 loops ... you want no errors.

Usually when you do get that message... one has to re-install OS (or re-image, or attempt a OS repair)
(but not always ... )

If you can figure out where the problem lies (like if you only changed one BIOS item)

and set it back ... then re-boot ... the OS might boot again

Or ... if you did what 'bus2b' said ... you definately will need to re-install.

When I saw this same message on a friends new computer where XP was being installed I copied this file from the root directory from my computer to his and all was fine.

If I am not mistaken this is a hidden and read only attributed file. Copy it friom another computer with XP after changing the setting in Windows Explorer [ toools/folder-options/view ] to show all hidden and system files.

Had the same issue - the work around doesn't always work.

When I had it it turned out to be a HD problem.
