I just bought my GF a webcam for a gift for her laptop so we can talk on the holidays.
I know her laptop has 2 USB ports but she is running NT4 (Workstation). Any ideas as to if this is going to work or not? I would like to be able to, but I understand NT has no usb "support". I didnt know if there is something out there that I can do to get it to work correctly. I know 95 didnt have USB support but my cam worked fine on 95. Can someone give me the lowdown?! THANKS in advance!! ;)

NT does not support USB devices, but there are some programs that claim to add USB support to NT. Word on the street is that they work er not that great.

Actually there is one driver that supposedly works pretty good, however, its commercial, so you hafta pay for it.
You could probabaly find it on Google, or if not, I could check around, I dont remember what company sells it, but Im sure I can find it somewhere.

NT 4.0 does not have support for USB. However some companies include NT 4.0 Drivers with there hardware.
Example: I have an Iomega USB Zip 250 and it works flawlessly under NT 4.0, however it does not support the standard hotswap usually associated with USB.

Windows 95 did have USB support, in releases after B.

So if there are not drivers included with the webcam then Sunner's idea is your best bet.

WinNt 4.0 with SP6a supports USB but not as good as 98 or 2000. The comapny has to write drivers for NT 4 which not too many are doing. My friend has a USB scanner that works fine on NT 4. ;)

I read your post yesterday on this matter, and out of curiosity of the matter, I started my own thread. Here is a LINK. However with regards to your girlfriends computer,I am in agreement with hungrypete. If it is her personal home computer maybe she should consider switching to Win 98 or 2000, simply because it is more user friendly and more widely supported than NT.

Now, please don't take this the wrong way, I mean nothing snide by it. But if it's the age old situation of "This is her workstation at her job, and she really doesn't have any other way to access the internet", respect the fact that it is not her own personal computer to go installing software willy nilly. Get permission from the network admin before attempting to install drivers. In fact you won't even be able to install drivers in NT unless you ARE the admin. And should the admin deny your request, accept that and move on.

On the other hand, if it IS her own machine, I wish you the best of luck in your quest, and would be VERY interested to know what you discover.

All IMHO..
JR. ;)

nt4 on a laptop? that always runs like crap for me (but my company is stingy with the laptop power). We keep 95 and 98 (its not funny, i have to fix them, constantly) on all of our laptops here. Theres a decent chance her company wont like her wanting to hook up a webcam to it anyways, thats 100% personal use, unless she can get them to buy into video conferencing with customers or something.
