Question for you:

I have set up RAS w/point to point protocol, and want to connect to a server over my LAN. I setup the VPN support on my Win98 client and try to 'dial' in, but I get this message:

You do not have dial-in permission.
Change the permissions on the computer you are dialing in to, or contact your network administrator.

I've checked and double checked and I've got Dial In permission enabled under tha account I am trying to use (admin account and user account). Any ideas what I am missing.

P.S. This is necessary for me to be able to remote admin my NT Server, which houses the pProxy, thus this falls under the Distributed Computing Forum.

I remote manage NT servers using VNC. Although that's not good if you need to transfer files it's great for that feeling of really being there.
Sorry I can't help with your pptp problem tho..

If you can, check the eventlog on the nt-box. It should tell you with what account you're trying to connect, and i guess the domain prefix you're using is not the one ras expects.

I'm with Wiz. VNC or even (shudder) Reachout would be a sight easier than PPTP. It's a ah heck most of the time.

Wild guess, since I've never used RAS : would it be a domain issue ?

- The server you're trying to access is on a domain, is your comp on another ? Do you have a particular user account un the remote server, or would you maybe need to establish a domain trust ? Just shooting in the dark...

Suggestions have been made for you to try VNC. What program are you currently using to try to administer your system? If it's PCAnywhere, did you give your dial-in 'account' permission to access the system in the properties of the PCAnywhere host itself?

9x and ME, etc., don't "belong" to domains in the way that NT would. That is - if your client machine was NT Workstation rather than 98, then it would need to be a member of the domain to get validated and allow a user to login (even via PPP/RAS). The 9xs are members of a workgroup, and what might be helpful is to put the domain name in the "Workgroup" field as part of the machine's ID info.

The permissions thing is a PITA. If you have VPN setup on the 98, I think you also need it setup on the server end as well. You may want to just get plain vanilla RAS working first so that you can login, get your profile stuff working, and then try adding VPN.

Even if you got everything working just right, trying to admininister NT via the dialup & RAS with nothing else, will only get you to the shares and maybe any scripts that stop or start services. Unfortunately, NT doesn't have the rich telnet management features that a *nix has unless you maybe have the special Telnet services installed - and even then....

I'll also go with Wiz and recommend VNC once you get the RAS working. We use similar (PC Duo) to remotely manage NT servers, including over dialup. In your case, if you have VNC on the RAS server, you can dial into it, start it up, and then bop around to whereever you need to go that also has VNC running within your lan.

[EDIT - saw what Fardringle wrote... it's been over a year since we setup RAS. I think the RAS service has its own unique account (like a system account) and that needs permission to access certain parts of the system IIRC]

I do use VNC, but I want to be able to establish drive shares for these computers when need be, which VNC doesn't allow. I haven't used pcAnywhere since I discovered VNC, but maybe I should check into it again.
