I wonder if the latest tech out there at the moment renders Arecibos' basic design parameters obsolete. If not, I hope another takes its place with all of the latest tech built in.
Won't happen for a long time. If we can't bother to spend a few million to keep an existing system maintained so it won't literally collapse on itself, we're not going to spend billions on a new one.

Can't we get similar results with radio telescope arrays. Essentially a giant synthetic aperture dish. Probably can't get the deep gain though. With all of the bands being sold for wireless communication, it probably makes sense just go off planet with a telescope anyway.
