The National Rifle Assocation (NRA) on Sunday released an iOS game that lets players shoot various targets with a gun of choice.

The NRA has framed the game, NRA: Practice Range, as its "new mobile nerve center," which also includes gun-safety tips, gun laws, and other educational materials.

"NRA: Practice Range also offers a 3D shooting game that instills safe and responsible ownership through fun challenges and realistic simulations," according to the app's description. "It strikes the right balance of gaming and safety education, allowing you to enjoy the most authentic experience possible."

An app to inform and teach people more about firearm safety and gaming is a very good thing. It's one of the reasons the NRA is such a respected organization to gun owners, hunters and firearm enthusiasts.

Lol did you type that with a straight face?

Is this the same NRA, that every time there is a mass shooting tragedy they blame it in video games and violence in the media and culture?

And you pay them to spread their fud? Your brain must be so shiny and clean!

My guess is he posted this thread so that somebody else wouldn't post it from your viewpoint.

In my opinion this app teaches children to murder clay discs and should be banned!

I've already heard whiners and idiots complain that the targets look like coffins and that it's horribly insensitive because of how recent the newtown tragedy was and so forth. Morons.

I haven't tried the app, but it seems like a good tool to teach and learn.

If this app can save the life of only 1 child it will all be worth it.

The 3d game portion of the app would have limited use in terms of being able to make a person a better shot.

Hopefully people who download the app pay enough attention to the safety portions.

You have a point. There is an irony that the head of the NRA a few days after the Newtown massacre was blaming violent video games and now the NRA comes out with a shooting video game. I wonder if they've changed their position or the irony is lost on them. I do agree that video games can be used well as an educational tool and putting safety tips in can be a good thing (so long as they're not tips on loading screens that no one ever actually reads). Maybe they can slip mental health screenings into a video game somehow soon.

so this is worse then all the FPS shooters out? BTW none of them are the cause of the shooting. They don't help you become a better shot.

It should have been expected. The NRA puts out a video app that teaches gun safety and only shows targets and the left-wing gun hating liberal Democrats put out a video that lets you shoot people "the NRA president" in the head.
Which one is hateful, evil and violent? It ain't the NRA.

Painting with a broad brush.... nice... doesn't matter who does it. It isn't really prove any point now come up with a scientific poll that shows that over 50% (or even any sizable percentage) of liberals share the same viewpoint as this person and you have an argument.

I'd have preferred you post this article with links to an unbiased opinion.

NRA spits on the graves of Newtown massacre victims with release of mobile shoot-'em-up app for iPhone, iPad
National Rifle Association launched free game that could allow children to play target practice and pay to unlock more powerful weapons, including an assault weapon like the one used by Adam Lanza to kill 20 children and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14.

The app was a demonstration of the NRA's complete domination of the mental landscape of 'gun nuts' or should I say gun fantasist, folk who are religiously indoctrinated with the notion that guns are sacred means of self defense and freedom from tyranny, that the weaponry of the 21st century and beyond the government has in it's possession equated even proximally with the power of yesteryears musket ball. One day they say video games are killing kids and the next that video games are educating them and no cognitive dissonance occurs in these poor sad indoctrinated brains because no cognition occurs there.

faux liberal outrage

It's not outrage, it's funny and it's even funnier watching you sheep falling over yourselves to defend your master (or messiah in righty terms).

Exactly how does a video game help make you a better shooter? Are the "safety" tips front and center of the app or are they set between scenes? How many of you used the in-app purchase to buy new guns?

Not to judge or anything but what kind of parent teaches their kids about guns through a poorly executed gun app?

when i was a kid my dad bought me a lifetime membership in the NRA.

I wasn't all that interested at the time, but now i'm glad he did it.

anyways, i recieved their kids magazine "NRA InSights" for awhile. it wasn't all that interesting (it's hard to make something interesting to a kid...especially something geared towards safety), but it was filled with attempts to promote gun safety and responsible gun ownership. it even had their stupid mascot, Eddie Eagle, always reminding kids what you do in a home if you see a gun. (Stop! Don't touch! Leave the area! Tell an adult!.... why do i still remember that :/ )

you people love to forget that the NRA is a gun safety organization. You love to forget the contribution of the NRA during WWI and WWII in training troops in basic marksmanship. You love to forget the existence of a branch of the government called the civilian marksmanship program created specifically to increase basic marksmanship skills in the US civilian population.

The outrage towards this particular app, and the NRA for making it, is misplaced. I see this as an effort by old men who are out of touch with young people to connect and push the gun safety message. that's why they're taking design motifs from shoot em ups..games that DO sell. But they're trying to push a message that simply won't come across on this medium. it's the same problem encoutered by people trying to make "christian" video games. people will either take a message or they won't. a video game isn't the right place to convey a serious message.

You think that is unbiased?

Here is a shocking fact, millions of law abiding Americans own Ar-15's and "gasp" many children already shoot them with their families.

that's why i'm not sure he's serious. given his sig, and the absurdity of his comment, i *hope* he was being facetious.

Thanks for the story, it was really touching. You didn't answer any of my questions though.

But with regards to your story; you said the magazines were about gun safety? How did you know this? How was that safety information displayed to you?

don't patronize me.

being that I didn't (and won't) download the app, I have no idea how safety was presented in it. but given that it's probably made by the same people who make insights, you can bet it's gonna be bland and mostly focused on trying to teach gun safety.

But with regards to your story; you said the magazines were about gun safety? How did you know this? How was that safety information displayed to you?
...i know this because i read them. >.>
safety information was displayed in a lot of ways. gun handling rules, safety mascots, etc. google nra insights, check their homepage to see some idea of how they handle it. it may have changed in the past 15 years (since i stopped recieving them...) but i doubt all that much.

the magazines mostly focused on target shooting (things like camp perry, or boy scouts, etc), or kids going hunting with parents, and so on. they did NOT have the anecdotes about guns being used in self-defense or stopping a crime that are featured in every other NRA publication. (those things are not appropriate to a children's publication, and the NRA knows that...)
