According to a new report from research firm NPD, iOS’s U.S. market share (by sales) jumped from 26% in the third quarter of 2011 to 43% by October and November. Android, however, came out on top, with 47% market share during those two months, down from 60% in Q3.

Wow. The two and one half year old iPhone 3GS is selling more than any Android phone on the market. Crazy.

Thats around when the 4s hit. And? Your point? Also, they were giving away 3gs. Do we really need another one of these? That's so 2011.

The point is the 2.5 year old phone is selling more than any other android phones, even the free android phones.

We already knew that this was coming. The iPhone hadn't been refreshed in over a year and there was a lot of pent-up demand. It will be interesting to see if Apple maintains any of this momentum going forward or if the increase in sales is simply due to releasing a new product.

What makes the Apple Iphone so good compared to the top end Android phones?

I mean comparing the specs between SG SII and the Iphone 4s the SGSII clearly is the winner.

It is just that iOS is better optimized and apple has a better market.

That is all I see here.

well, partly that's balkanization on android's part. you want a "free" iphone there's 1 option. you want a "free" android there's 50.

Most amazing for me is the SGS1's place on the list.
which one is that? isn't the "Samsung Galaxy S 4G" the tweener SGS?

What you see is more than specs. There's more to a device than specs, that's why Apple is doing so well. They don't focus on specs. They focus on what their device can do. Just look at the Apple commercials compared to the old Droid commercials.

The iPhone will always outsell any single Android phone. The reason is simple... The iPhone is one model over many carriers where phones like the sgs is one per carrier. The proof they didn't combine is seeing the epic in the list.

I am more curious as to why such an extreme change in iOS and Android's market shares.

damn I hope Android regains their foothold.

I like multiple competitors honestly. It makes companies strive to be better. What I don't like is anti competitive behavior. ICS will help Android overall IMO and both iOS and Android will live on.

All the new carriers. Makes me winner why Apple took as long as they did.

Also pent up demand for a new device. You can see that their share dipped in the previous quarter because there wasn't a new phone.

I also just realized that the chart only lists October and November. Including December might balance the results out to a greater degree as any large initial spike has its overall impact reduced.

You must haven't seen benchmarks of the A5. It's pretty powerful.

I'm also surprised at Apple's comeback. I guess the 4S and free iPhone did some good. We'll see how 2012 pans out.

me too. Vibrant was the biggest selling Galaxy S phone in the US before it got prematurely replaced by Galaxy S 4G on T-Mobile. Half the phones on the list are budget phones and half are top tier phones.

this chart also happens to just capture the 3GS price drop, and 4S price increase, while not capturing most of razr and rezound sales and 0 galaxy nexus sales. i think the skyrocket came out just towards the end of this too.

the massive surge for the 4S release alone is probably most of the difference there.

Why doesn't the graph strike me as "amazing"? Because they cut their data set off with the launch of the iPhone 4s and it ignores the launch of the Galaxy Nexus which Launched in Dec, and was the most anticipated Android phone by far.

Anyways, I look at "data" like this suspeciously whether it be in favor of iOS or Android as it seems sometimes iOS includes iPods and iPads and Android only includes phones, or the other way around. I don't think there ever is a really true fair value assigned to either "camp"

You act like NPD has a horse in the race.

Even if this is a cyclical bump from the iPhone 4S launch, if the NPD report is accurate, this appears to be the first time that the iPhone took market share from Android smartphones. Up until now, it was Android (especially) and iPhone both rapidly growing and taking share away from RIM.

Since the graph left out the first half of 2010, we can't easily compare the effect of the iPhone 4 on the domestic smartphone market but I don't recall it ever sniffing anywhere close to 40%.
