After all, the goal of any product is to generate revenue for the company that manufacturers that product.

I don't think Patranus is trying to derail the thread. But I will admit that I don't understand his point.

The goal of a company is to maximize it's profits, not revenue - usually couched in some form of verbage about maximizing return on investment for shareholders... but that's still profit, not revenue. I could pull some of the mission statements from some companies and quote them, but most of them don't discuss revenue that much - they are usually big on profit. Anyway, companies are usually big on profit, not so interested in raw revenue except where it helps increase profit.

Moving on.. revenue is sales. So you could make billions in revenue by selling billions of something that costs $1 to make for $1 each. And yet you'd have no profit at all.

So, Patranus, I honestly admit that I don't understand your point.

Obviously Apple makes more per unit since they do both hardware and software. Patranus acts like Android being free makes it sell like crazy, but you can't run Android without a device, and guess what, you need to buy that device. Since manufacturers don't have to pay for all the OS development they can afford to price devices lower than Apple can.

Arguments of profit margins are irrelevant. That's what competition is for and Google chose to develop Android as a failsafe against closed systems like iOS, and it's a pretty good thing they did since all the other platforms are trending towards closed systems.

Google won't make money if people can't access their services. As stated in another thread, Google isn't upset at the iPhone market share, since many iPhone users use google services as well.
