Very impressive growth - they had a lot of big releases in Q2 which I'm sure helped.
Q3 will be more interesting. Obviously the iPhone is going to get a huge bump from the iPhone 4 release, but with multiple releases on the biggest carriers (Droid X, Droid 2? and Captivate) Android is not without its potential for growth, either.
yea it's going to be interesting that's for sure. And I'm sure the iPhone4 numbers will be massive as well.
problem with the iphone 4 is that it's only going to last a few months and they only come out with a new model every year. Smartphones get obsolete after a few months. There are going to be lots of android phones coming through the pipeline that are going to blow the iphone 4 out of the water... dual core snapdragons are coming.
I predict the iPhone marketshare will dwindle more. AT&T has YET to get a top Android phone. Well there's the Captivate, but somehow it seems like HTC and Motorola push harder for their products. Or maybe VZW has nice ad campaigns. AT&T needs to push their Android phones a bit more, but I'm sure thats grey territory considering their loyalty to the iPhone. And once the Captivate launches, we'll have a real competitor for a top notch Android phone within AT&T. I think then you will start seeing AT&T's own internal market split up. Right now AT&T is mainly just BlackBerry vs. iPhone. The HTC WinMo phones and the idiotic Backflip are just moot. The Aria... I don't know. It's too new to say much, but once again it's a low end phone too. Once you launch something at the iPhone's price point, we'll see how well the phones fight and how it turns out....

Uh the captivate launched a while ago
isnt it also lacking some features or is that just the Aria ?
You mean being crippled by at&t? Only thing is sideloading apps but that was easily bypassed already.

lol yeah. i thought they were delaying shipping or something. might've gotten mixed up with something else... but either way this thing is supposed to help out Android's Q3 numbers. we'll see.
How can an OS that is given away for free be the top selling OS in the US?

Secondly, the data only covers last quarter.

The data clearly states that it only covers the last quarter, no one is claiming otherwise. If the thread title were renamed "Android devices top selling..." you'd still have just as much of a hissy fit here.
Do yourself - and everyone that posts here - a favor. Read the sticky at the top of the forum: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2093753
You are clearly in violation of the second point of emphasis - baiting others into an altercation. Your post adds no value to the discussion and you're just trying to start a fight. Keep your trash in P&N, thanks.

Again, the OS is not being sold therefore it is no surprise that it has gained market share. What is wrong with stating the obvious?
Secondly, the title of the thread nor the OP makes it clear what period that data was gathered. I was making it clear that Android was the top selling OS in the US for a single quarter. Android was the top shipped OS in the US in Q2 2010, not the top selling OS in the US.
NPD's number crunchers have just announced their findings for Q2 2010, concluding that 33 percent of phones sold during the period had Android on board.
ummmmm

Regarding your first point - that's awfully inane and you know it. Its not like Google is just wandering the streets handing people Android on a CD and then saying "Hey! My marketshare increased!" they still need people to actually purchase phones that contain said OS. A high-end Android phone costs no less than a high end Windows Mobile phone, despite the fact that Microsoft charges a lisencing fee and Google does not. So that argument is completely debunked.
Regarding the second...the most current period of reporting was, in fact, Q2 2010. If you'd clicked the article and read it, it also clearly states that it is talking about Q2. Perhaps you are in the habit of reading titles and ignoring content, but that doesn't change the fact that the information is still clearly being reported.
I repeat - you know for a fact that you are adding nothing to this discussion and therefore are just trying to spark a flame war. You are quite clearly in violation of the rules which are explicitely posted at the top of the forum. Do you know why that sticky is there? Because too many worthless flamewars are going on in what is supposed to be a technical forum. Flamewars intentionally started by posts such as yours.
I think you are confused by the Android business model.
Back on topic.
This is a great achievement for HTC and Motorola.
