EDIT: This setup is only getting the music signal from a portable MP3 player that connects to your head unit through an AUX in. Or just use your MP3 player as your head unit! So no radio, CDs, or satellite radio, unless someone knows how to directly wire these speakers to the head unit (should definitely be doable).

This is really only intended for long trips and such, since most of the time I HOPE the Z-5500's will be your computer speakers, not your full-time car speakers :p

Well, I've been running my 8inch 120W subwoofer from my Logitech Z-2200's in my car for a while now, and it sounds really really good.

Wouldn't it be a good idea economically to get the Logitech Z-5500's and hook EVERYTHING into my car attached to a 500W inverter (which I already have)?

The 5 satellites and the 188W 10in subwoofer would sound REALLY nice and for a very good price too...

For regular car audio one would have to spend at least $250 just for a good sub, the amp, the enclosure, and the wiring kits, plus the trouble of wiring. Then one would have to spend ~$300 for a decent upgrade of component speakers, another amp, and a head unit with all the necessary preamp outs.

And yet the Z-5500 already has all this...

Nope, not invoking the sig. I'm not being evil am I ?

It's a semi-serious inquiry.

i would expect a decent amp to cost around 500 dollars u.s You might get a nice one used, but thats a risky proposition depending on how it was ussed(abus3ed). I like the idea of the 8 inch sub though. its still controllable . i run a 100 wpc linear pwer amplifier with a speaker box with two 6 and 1/2 inch wppfers and a piezo tweeter. NO SUB!- just good tight bass and reasonably high fidelity.

Ahhh... but that's the beauty of the setup...

The amp for EVERYTHING is already screwed onto the back of the Z-5500's sub, so $250 for the Z-5500 is essentially getting me crossovers, the amp, the component speakers, the sub, the wiring, and the sub enclosure all in one package.

Sorry, I don't have pics at the moment and I can't get any right now because

a. It's dark
b. My trunk is packed with stuff for moving back to college.

Lemme do a quick and crude paint job of my current setup. Gimme a sec...

The only problem I see here is that Car Audio Equipment (Amplifiers in particular) are desgned to work in extreme heat, I am afraid that after your car sits in the hot sun all day and you turn on the Z5500's they will not last long due to the high ambient air temperature. They will simply burn out and die.

Good point, but I'm planning on only using this setup sparingly, and perhaps with active cooling on the sub's heatsink fins (fan).

By sparingly, you would have to remove all components out of the vehicle each time you're not using it. Leaving it in the car while not turned on isn't enough.

Seriously, just buy actual car audio stuff. It's a "cool" idea but it's just kinda stupid IMO. A car's soundstage isn't nearly the same as one where those speakers would be ideal. (Think about speaker + tweeter placement)

I would probably just scrap the satellite speakers and just double the sub as the car sub and the desktop sub like I'm doing now with my Z-2200 sub. No problems after a year of doing this. Thanks for the replies. I'll bump this in the morning to see what other craziness insues.

The first time I asked this question someone told me that I could seriously set my car on fire, and that he had seen people's cars do so. I went ahead and did it anyway and everything's been fine.

yea pretty much. thats the only reason i can think of why car audio equipment has such a price premium. the stuff i've bought does last through much baking in the sun
