As you probably know the three Galaxy S models are different, so it is likely that the Captivate and Fascinate don't do this. I have tried it on 3 Vibrants so I assure you that it does occur. The 4 soft buttons will black out before the touchscreen blacks out and you are required to touch the screen once prior to being able to activate a soft button if it is blacked out.
Settings -> Sound & Display -> Keyboard Timeout -> Same as Screen Timeout
That will fix that. Don't know why it isn't set that way by Samsung.
Maybe because I'm running Bionix 1.8...I'm thinking it may be more feasible for you to go with a custom rom first, rather than going with a new phone. It is easy to do, and the people over at the XDA forums are very helpful. I have tried recreating the problem you show in the video, without success.
If you are on AT&T and you want a decent "stock" phone, why not just get an iP4?
IMHO, the G2 is the best all around phone out there right now. Native Froyo with no Sense, Touchwiz or other bloat. But again...it sounds like the OP is on ATT and we keep talking about Tmo phones. ATT doesn't want good Android phones. The Captivate is the only real option for an Android phone on ATT.
The G2 has a slower processor, inferior screen, and a weaker compared to the Galaxy S. Also the G2 may never see an OS update since Gingerbread is rumored to require a 1ghz processor.
IMO the Galaxy s hate is beyond overblown. If you can live with the hit or miss gps performance there isn't a better Android phone out there.
sigh...
Since the G2 shipped with vanilla Froyo, it will get the upgrade before any Galazy phone.

How will the G2 be upgraded first if it doesn't even meet the minimum requirements to run Gingerbread?
show me anything from Google or HTC saying that the min is 1 GHz (no rumors).
The OS isn't out so naturally everything is rumors at this point. Regardless their is no denying the G2 has far from cutting edge specs. Plus if Gingerbread does make more use of gpu acceleration the Adreno 205 may be a liability as well.
oh...so in other words you don't know any facts?
Fact is that vanilla Android (see Nexus 1) always gets the updates first. Do you really think HTC would put out a phone that wouldn't support Gingerbread? Don't you think they already know the specs?
But that's right. You know more than one of the (or is it the?) top selling cell phone manufacturers.
Assuming the phone is compatible with the next version of the OS yes it should be upgraded quicker. I'm just going by the info online regarding gingerbread, plenty of people think 1ghz will be a requirement. Personally I am hoping they do put in some type of minimum that encourages manufacturers to use more modern SoCs.
I see. But if you stick to online chatter...then the G2 might be getting a boost up to 1GHz
I was just trying to make the point that there are SO many rumors out there that its best to only rely on facts. XDA used to be the best place to get insider info and that even turned into a rumor mill where people were posting things third or fourth hand.
The good news for Galaxy S folks is that the rumor is that Samsung is already working on Gingerbread for them. Now who knows what the time frame for that would be, but its out there.
I'm just super happy with my G2 and I have 100% confidence in HTC and the XDA guys that Gingerbread, Ice cream or even Jamoca won't be an issue with my phone.
Yeah, I've noticed how more and more threads on XDA end up being devoted to rumors that never pan out.
I don't have a problem with HTC at all, they make really solid devices. But as a hardware guy I found the G2 to be disappointing since they went with slower hardware than what Moto and Samsung are using.
No "Keyboard Timeout" on the Vibrant/Captivate/Fascinate - that setting only exists on the Epic, which actually has a keyboard.
