The National Science Foundation awarded a $45 million grant this week to the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center to purchase a 2,728-processor Compaq supercomputer.

Compaq will build the basketball court-sized system based on the AlphaServer SC architecture and make it completely operational by the end of 2001, said Jesse Lipcon, vice president of Compaq's Alpha Technology group in Marlborough, Mass.

It will be organized into 682 nodes, each of which will possess four processors and 1G byte of RAM. The system's hard-disk array will contain 50T bytes of primary storage. The supercomputer will be capable of a peak performance of 6 trillion operations per second, he said.

The Pittsburgh supercomputer will be used for forecasting weather and earthquakes, developing more efficient combustion engines, studying molecular factors in biology, and analyzing physical, chemical and electrical properties of materials.

The National Science Foundation is paying $36 million for hardware and software for the supercomputer. The supercomputing center will receive $9 million over three years to operate the computer.

Lipcon said the supercomputer, under certain conditions, can match the speed of IBM's supercomputer titan, ASCI White, which is capable of 12.3 trillion operations per second.

I basically have enough guts to walk into the CEO's office and ask for what I want. Especially if it benefits Compaq. Sure I'm serious. I'll make every effort to get this machine during burn-in.

If I don't ask - the answer will be "No", right? 🙂
 
Correct me if I am wrong, but if this thing uses Alpha processors, it won't do so well at RC5 (at least not as well as 2728 PIIIs or Athlons). It would be interesting to see what this could put through with SETI.

You're correct. But, even processors that are crappy at RC5 do okay when you have a few thousand of them.🙂

Assuming that the processors are 600 mhz Alpha 21264 with a multiplier of 2 kkeys/mhz (calculated from dnets speed page) this thing would do 3.2 gigkeys/sec or 1 million blocks per day.

Any idea what this would do at SETI?

Edit: The alphas are more efficient at OGR, so maybe, you should spread the wealth. The ratio of rc5/ogr multipliers is .35
 
I dont care if the processers run at 100 mhz (which they wont) when you have 2,000 of them it will be like amazing. If Dan could do that DPC and /. will crap their pants.
 
Even though I'm an RC5 crackhead, I have to agree, burn this thing in with SETI, or OGR(if it's supported). We still like to maximize assimilations you know.😉
 
I would have to say the following on this issue:

If DanC can get these cracking TA even for a small time... awesome. Even though rc5 might not be the most effecient on the machine, compared to OGR or seti, perhaps the flawlessness of rc5, the ease to setup, and the quickness of a wu being completed makes rc5 the ideal project for DanC to run on this thing. Just think, if he dumped this on the seti machines, the things would collapse. And I doubt setting up a setiQ machine to hold 2728 seti wu's would solve it.

Note: This is not a pro RC5, screw seti/ogr/whatever msg. This is a msg sayig that if all DanC feels comfortable runnig on theis gargantuan(speling!) server, then let him run that. (think of seeing A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I,J,K,L,M,N,O,P,Q,R,S,T,U,V,W,X,Y,Z
AA,AB,AC,AD,AE,AF,AG,AH,AI,AJ,AK,AL,AM,AN,AO,AP,AQ,AR,AS,AT,AU,AV,AW,AX,AY,AZ and so on race each other on the output screen!
