Ice fog... It usually starts around -35 or -40

It's not the CO2 that makes the fog, it's the moisture in the air. All the water vapor freezes. At -60 you can't see the car in front of you sometimes. You know you have to stop at the intersection because you can't see the light. Green lights penetrate the fog, red lights don't.

From my next to last winter in Alaska

That pic was taken around noon. For reference, the truck is about 30' away. The sign is about 100' away. The ice fog wasn't too bad that day. The longer it stays cold though the worse it gets. All the moisture kicked out by the car exhaust keeps building up.

At that temp if you took a bucket of water and tossed the contents in the air would it be frozen before it hit the ground?

I've been exposed to around -20 temps and that makes your nostrils freeze shut almost instantly. I can't imagine another 40 degrees colder than that.

Actually, if it's hot water it all evaporates into steam before it hits the ground.

Unfortunately no monitors work at that temp... I've tried. :)

CPU outside
Monitor and self inside :)

Exactly! Just set the box out in the porch, and run the cables inside.

I took THIS PICTURE a couple of days ago. One online readout had my place at -54F this morning, but I wasn't about to go out just to take a picture of a temperature sign. :p

:Q Did you fail math?

Nope, just made a mistake in my calculations. Good thing I'm human or that would have been really embarrassing. Seems I can do complex integrals and calculate the lattice parameters of a face-centered-cubic crystal structure but can't do simple algebra anymore o_O

It's not me I am worried about, it's my vehicle. :p Do you know how many vehicles I have seen stranded because they broke the beads on their tires by driving too fast before they got them rounded out?

Besides, I am not the one that ran away to Hawaii.

Neither do I, especially considering that during one of our coldest winters I was working outside changing the radiator on my car. :p

:Q

Yes, there were reports coming in from some parts of Tok of -72F.

If that temperature is correct, it's 7 degrees off from tying the all-time low temperature for Alaska, recorded at Prospect Creek, AK (-80 degrees), and 8 degrees away from tying the all-time low recorded on the North American continent (i.e., -81 degrees at Snag, Yukon). Wow!

Cold weather people disturb me. They watch as the temperature falls to ludicrous levels then pray that it get just a little bit colder.

It's currently 47 degrees here and I'm thinking of riding my motorcycle to work today. I'd better bundle up though, it's still pretty chilly. Brrrrrr. :p

If I could get a job, house, and a decent amount of stuff to do in town, I'd move to Alaska. It was hot outside today... like sweating hot.... in February.

Huh? Man, who lit the fuse on your tampon? Who said I was a "cold weather person" to begin with? Furthermore, I assure you I wasn't "praying that it get just a little bit colder."

Perhaps you should find some more pressing issues in this world to disturb you.

I just like to see the temp drop so I can brag about it here like it's a personal accomplishment :D

Who needs a radiator at those temps?

Air cooling doesn't quite cut it, due to the engine design. :p

QFT... The belt that drove my water pump broke at -70 and my car over heated in the middle of nowhere. Had to drive it home a couple hundred yards at a time.

Bear in mind that those temps are National Weather Service data... NWS thermometers bottom out at -84. (IIRC) During the winter of 89-90 there were towns where the NWS thermometers crapped out and non-NWS thermometers closed in on -90. I believe that Ft Yukon and McGrath were both claiming readings down to -87, -88...

off topic but would there be a short-term (1yr) job available? I want to live in Alaska just to see that it really exists.

stuck in CA and its traffic takes toll on you
