Who says RIM doesn't have their finger on the pulse of modern smartphones. holy shit, they have too many yes men at RIM, 50% off 1 week after launch, rumor is they can't give them away...

50% off at Amazon, Let's Talk, Wirefly...

If RIM has a single person in the chain of command to stop train wrecks, they need to abort the BlackPad now, and hire a 17 year old to manage future phone development.

with or without contract? If it's 50% without, then I'm curious. If it's with, then nothing to see here. Just another day at the office.

Not really. When the Pearl launched it was price locked like a mofo. Pretty sure the Curve was too.

R.i.p. R.i.m.

When your own users don't want to upgrade from a years old phone design, you have big problems, and I think the BB faithful are a little gun shy over the Storm already.

The BlackPad is going to be a failure of epic proportions...

I'm no BB fanboy, but it's painful to watch this shit... And with fewer viable players in the market, the consumer loses..

Yea, RIM is dead. Good riddance.

Maybe corporations like mine with start allowing Droid's once RIM is gone. I feel sorry for some coworker friends of mine that have to haul around two phones because my company doesn't allow Droid on our exchange server. iPhone and BB only. Suits me just fine since I only have to haul my iPhone, but if/when I switch this will play in. I won't be hauling around 2 phones.

I think people are still addicted to their QWERTY keyboards and email system. This and enterprise are the only things keeping RIM alive.

So what you're saying is, you want to give a 17-year-old a rimjob? :sneaky:

Was just reading that Apple is expected to overtake BB in US marketshare this year.

RIM still has a massive hold on the market, but in the fast paced world of cell phones, things change quickly.

My BB8830 was the best QWERTY keyboard I've ever used. Nothing has ever compared and yet I know they have come out with even better keyboards than that. I do wish they could get some good software on that type of hardware because I would be all over it.

It's nice to know that the engineers behind the Pontiac Aztek found work in the cell phone industry :)

I'm tempted to buy a BlackPad just because it'll be a collector's item and a testament to RIM's piss poor judgment.

"WTF is that thing?"

It's a BLACKPAD baby :D

Its too bad, I'm a big fan of the portrait slider form factor and Blackberry makes great keyboards. If they'd just put a higher resolution screen & faster processor in here, I really think the Torch could have been a solid product.

I actually spent a few minutes with one yesterday afternoon and While I like BB's, this one I did not. It didn't seem as intuitive, and the icon layout sucked.
They were touting the OS 6 as this great thing, but it is just OS 5 tweaked to work on a touch screen.

Blatant Troll thread as this is, I'm going to tackle the numbers of the first weekend:

- BB Torch; 1 country, 1 carrier
- iPhone 4; 5 countries, multiple carriers

Not comparable in the slightest.

Regardless of the numbers sold, I think it is safe to say that the sales did not meet anyone's expectations given they have lowered the price so quickly.

Eh? OS 5 has been on touch screen for over a year.

Let me give you some perspective:

Torch 1st Weekend: 150k
Nexus One after 74 days: 135k

"They" haven't. These 3rd party sellers often have phones for cheaper direct from the carrier. Best Buy sold the Droid for $199 straight, Verizon wanted $299 with a rebate. T-Mobile sold the HD2 for $199, you could get it from Amazon and Wirefly for cheaper from early on too. Those are just a few examples off the top of my head.

Nexus One was an online only, unsubsidized phone.

Comparing the Torch to something like the Droid, or something else along those lines I think would be more appropriate. Comparing to the iPhone is silly, I think comparing sales to that is a little unfair. It is like comparing first day sales of Wii Kitchen Master to MW2.
