Now that Windows 10 is released... I feel like installing Linux Mint.

Thanks for reading.

I decided that MS monitoring my every keystroke and mouse click (including sucking up my online passwords) wasn't for me. I'm still even a bit leery that the "release" version of Windows 10 might still have that capability within it, laying dormant, possibly to be able to be re-activated by the NSA. (I mean, why else would they go to that extent, to do all of the work to embed that capability into the OS. Surely they plan to use it for more than just beta-testing.)

Edit: No wonder they want to make it free. <Oprah> Free spying on everyone. </Oprah>

And you think Mint makes you safe from NSA spying?? Really?

In any case, I say go for it as well. I am a mostly happy Mint user myself, but I still assume all of my data are belong to the NSA.

I have Linux Mint 17 which is good,I'm actually typing this post on Ubuntu, tried Win10 but it kept failing installation or just after first boot with error message, anyway Windows is great for gaming which is only reason I use it,Linux is getting better all the time IMHO.

I did a fresh install of Ubuntu this morning after the Win10 failure and it installed all drivers including my wireless fine etc, simple boring install lol....

Lucky have a few old PCs to play with,I would not recommend any Windows Alpha build for main PC which I know some users are doing in other forums.

You are funny.

You do realize that you can stop alot of this with a properly configured hardware firewall. Only allow traffic out and to destinations that you know and trust..

Just takes work.

I thought of typing something stupid for the NSA or similar agencies to gather and analyse, regardless of OS which is W7.

I would if Linux wasn't such a complete PITA to get anything accomplished. I sure hope Windows 7 has EOL extensions because that was the best OS MS has ever made and based on 8 and where they are headed with Windows, the best OS they will ever make.

Doing something you shouldn't be doing? I don't care if microsoft knows how many times I went to pornhub or collectionofbestporn. Or how many times I went to guru3d or how many hours of shadow of mordor I played.

This would be a hardware firewall made a company that a government doesn't wield influence over?

Some how I doubt that Mint Linux is going to protect you from the "NSA." I mean this year has pretty much demonstrated that Linux* has been an open book with the OpenSSL breach and the now on going Bash issues.

* have to be generic here since the Windows bashers are.

It is rather amusing when people see an option Windows Experience tool (that has been around since Windows 95 and can be disabled and is disabled by default in every edition to this point) and start talking about "giving information to the NSA." It doesn't make any sense. Doubly so when you take a gander at what is in /log and /var/log along with various application logs. Same thing with the history system in Firefox, IceWeasel or whatever "Hey guys I copied Firefox and slapped a logo on it" browser that is out there.

Yea, I don't think they are monitoring every keystroke you type. What would the point be? That would be a ton of useless information Microsoft doesn't need, and a potential P.R. headache, to put it mildly. I think the warning they did put up was over-the-top, probably to head off posts like this.

Where does it say they are monitoring keystrokes and to this level of detail?

Maybe they do not monitor keystrokes but they do monitor words. Need examples?

Is all this paranoia coming from the fact that the Windows search feature now includes web results as well?

No, it was in the EULA to sign up for the Experience Program or whatever they called it to get the tech preview. It clearly said that they collect what you type and your mouse clicks, including personal information.

Which is common in the tech previews. They are giving it to you to... you know... test and report issues etc.

Classic Shell 4.10 works nicely with the preview. I was relieved to learn that as I don't like the new Win10 menu at all.

If Microsoft keeps doing what they've been doing lately, they may disappear from the desktop world.

I really think you should give it a try. You don't have to install it that's the nice thing about Linux just give the live session a try.
As long as you don't do a lot of streaming media(netflix, amazon ect.) or gaming it's a great OS.

If you're really concerned about your privacy you might give tails and tor a go. It's a bit more restrictive than mint and a bit slower but it's secure.

I felt a bit paranoid also and used my throwaway password for the account setup. and turned off the internet for a local account (partly because i don't remember my ms email account name or pass.)
