Does the 260 decode HD on the vidcard too?

Well that puts a turd in the ATi punchbowl.......! That is, until the X2 takes the single-card crown.

no, this is the only option that nvidia had. frankly, I'm surprised that they waited so long to do it. they tried to piss in amd's wheaties ( to continue with the defecatory metaphors ) with 9800gtx+ with little effect, they had to be hoping that 4870 wouldn't be quite so strong. nvidia's big problem here is that they can only hurt themselves here: amd will be able to lower prices much better than nvidia, and a huge price war will only stir up the market even more and net more sales for amd. nvidia needs to invest some of their billions in a time machine to get them to Q1 2009...
Im sure they will sell quite well now, unless ATi responds with price drops, then the cycle just continues. Im sure people who no-way-in-hell would have bought a 260/280 48 hours ago are seriously considering them.

260 core oc's much better with stock cooler, but 4850 has much better mem oc so they're actually about a wash.

With the GTX260 having a 448bit bus, it will gain alot more bandwidth even if the 4870 OCed more on the memory clock. A GTX260 hits roughly ~700/~1400/~2200 on Core/Shader/Mem clocks. They are able to reach stock GTX280 speeds.
As many said, GDDR5 brings less PCB complexity and an option for IHVs to increase bandwidth without the need to use massive memory interfaces.

I haven't seen ATi cards benchmarked with AA in Bioshock, it used to be the couldn't run AA in Bioshock.
Is that still the case?
If so, I don't consider any Bioshock comnparisons valid, as NVIDIA can run AA.
AA works in under DX9 in all UT3 based games, but not under DX10.nRollo:

It's invalid because the sort of people that buy high-end cards care about AA. The whole point of getting high-end cards is to crank the eye candy including AA.JPB:
Or is it because, ATI just simple kicks Nvidia ass in Bioshock ? Which they do.

Im not really surprised by nVIDIA recent series of moves. They aren't the type of company to sit idle. They have currently roughly 800million cash + further 800million in short term investments, meaning that they can aggressively go ahead with the price war.

Uhm... nvidia was OVERCHARGING. Trying to take advantage of their customers. If AMD wasn't around we'd be getting bent over by them.

So you would also agree that ATi was bending customers over with the 3870 and 3850 until nVidia forced them to lower the price?
This kind of talk is foolish, a company needs to make money to survive long term, the more money they make, the longer they assure they can continue to compete.
Edit- BTW- 8800GT in SLI still beats either one of these solutions for less money. Yes, nVidia is now competitive in the $300 space, just the $300 space has been getting beaten handily by the $260 space for a while now![]()
