OP, after all, you are Virtual Larry. Obviously, MS doesn't think you are real.

Discord is an option, but it's geared a bit more toward gaming and also creating communities. However, you can just chat with friends from a friends list like you would on Skype.

From MS's support

Here is a more detailed description of what you need to do:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...p/8b6caaaa-b793-478e-bd5e-3736c8b3f53d?auth=1

1. Go to https://www.skype.com/en/get-skype/

2. There, hover your mouse over the big blue button "Get Skype for Windows" BUT DO NOT click on the text but rather on the little vertical down arrow ( like a v )...

3. This will open a menu where you see, in the last position, "Get classic Skype". Click on that...

4. It will let you to download a 56 MB file "SkypeSetupFull.exe", which is the last incarnation of the older version... Save it in a folder that you name "Skype-classic" (to make sure you do not confuse it with the new version... which would be named Skype-8.12.0.14.exe)...

5. Make sure you exit completely from the new (hated) version 8 of Skype ...

5. Double click the "SkypeSetupFull.exe"... and let the installation proceed (while it does, make sure to uncheck the options you do not want such as making Bing your search engine and so on....). It will overwrite the version 8 (which is why version 8 must be have been fully closed)

6. At the end of the installation process, you will have the full version 7.40.0.104 with all its nice and useful setting options... and all your contacts (including your groups !). One option you may like to set is to disallow automatic updates (Tools > Options > Advanced > Automatic updates > Turn off automatic updates [you need to have administrative rights]). But beware,

(i) this may not prevent Skype to suggest to upgrade... When this occurs, you need to click "No" and it may (I have not checked) prevent further invitations for upgrading to appear... (!! this may put your Skype in a "do not disturb" status; if such is the case, turn it back to "on line")...

(i) this will keep you out of potentially important and useful security updates... So, we will need to see how long we can keep this version... Hopefully, the criticisms about the new version will trigger Microsoft to get back to the old and trustful layout and setting options... (Coca-Cola did it after the disastrous launch of the so-called "new [but hated] Coke"...).
Just to be clear.. it sounds like the version of Skype you want isn't working.. Skype itself is working and fully supported.. just not on a version you want..
