Just finished it this weekend and i sort of agree with the OP and yet disagree. The gameplay was lacking due to the excessive tedium. The story was nothing special and the major method of telling it was annoying (voice mails). However, that aside, there is a lot to enjoy about the game:

1. The physics. I loved the physics. During many lulls in the game I got a lot of enjoyment out of noticing the way bodies flew. Also, the physics provided a decent number of scares as I would kick a can during a particularly quiet moment. The physics are really what kept my interest. In that respect, this game is the equivalent of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.

2. The all-too-infrequent real storytelling moments. That 2 minutes total of storytelling flashbacks and nightmares was like the carrot in front of the stick for me. The story wasn't special but the flashbacks and other occasional moments were unique to me and interesting.

3. The particle weapon. I loved that thing.

4. The last 2 seconds or so.

I actually forgot about slow mo 98% of the time. I did finally use it a few times when encountering robotech enemies. That was really the only use of them for me.

I wonder if there is anyone who thinks this game is as good as half life 2. There were numerous points in half life 2 where I was just blown away with some aspect. Cool new weapon, cool new enemy, cool new character, whatever. I have never really had moments like those in any other game before, so for me it's no contest.
