I am debating on whether I should buy my laptop for college now or later. I really don't need it for another 3 or 4 months but I found a great deal.

I can get a Thinkpad R61 with the following specs:

Do I need it?
Will I likely come across another such deal before I need it?
Do I want it now?
Can I afford it?
 
Well I need it undoubtedly but not for another 4 months.

I guess that my main question is that will I come across a better a deal before I need it?

I don't really care to have it now, i'd be happy to have it a week before the semester starts.

It's a possibility that you'll come across good deals from now till then. You have Summer Sales, Memorial Day Sales, July 4th Sale, Fathers' Day Sales, etc.

Personally, I'd hold off for another month or two. You could always get it now and then you'll have 4 months to get accustomed to it so you won't have any issues when you truly need it.
 
I think there's a whole new line coming out, too. I'd personally wait, as you might like some of the new models more, or they'll have some better discounts on the existing ones. Technology always seems to get cheaper.
