NOW DEAD, was HOT: Toshiba 12x DVD + Decoder

Newegg.com has the 16x, but the toshiba 16x is supposed to be slow (2x) at ripping dvd's. Supposedly the 12x is faster though, and no one really needs a speed increase of 16x vs. 12x at this point anyway. And Toshiba's are quieter than the Pioneer's and support CloneCD better.

Toshiba 12x DVD-ROM at PC Century

PC Century does have a low reseller rating of 4.0/7.0, but that's only out of 3 entries.

anyone know of a better deal? i just took the lowest priced entry on pricewatch.

usually no need for a decoder card with today's cpu's (unless you want tv-out with it). i'll probably go for this.

can anyone confirm that 12x toshiba is quiet, reliable, and rips dvd's at a decent speed?

using it as we speak...good drive. Newegg rocks...They're in LA somewhere...I'm in Santa Barbara(70miles away), so it's like getting overnight shipping sometimes. Good customer service.

You can always count on Newegg to be one of the cheapest.

This drive maxes out at ~9x DAE, so if you have a 12x or higher burner you won't be able to do on-the-fly CD-to-CD audio burns. Everything else is excellent (spin-up time, transfer rate, recognizing various media).

Toshiba DVD-Rom are definitely one of the leading DVD Roms(from my research). Well, I am going to grab one since I do not have DVD-ROM before.

I HOPE anyone can find the cheaper store or online store...and repost it.

thanks,

there was another thread on this a couple of days ago...lots of input from lots of people.
y'all should chk it out

From what I hear, it rips pretty slow. Like 1-2x. Never tried it myself.

I have this drive and I love it. Super quiet, rips audio slow but really accurate. It's one of the reference drives for CloneCd and Exact Audio Copy.

I'm going to pick one up for my gf. Thanks!

few months earlier, before newegg had the 12x then sold out, didn't outpost have the 12x (and sold out), & people were talking about how good the 12x was for dvd ripping... or am i not recalling correctly?

I don't have an experience with DVD drives but plan to get one. I'm a little confused still with everyone talking about the 12x and 16x. Can anyone explicitly state how well the 12x and/or 16x toshiba are able to rip DVDs (NOT Audio CDs)?

i believe both the 12x and 16x read cd-rom's at the same speed (40x).

people are saying that the 16x does rip dvd's slowly - but that the 12x rips at a decent speed (confirmation please? i heard that toshiba had "de-engineered" the 16x to rip slower)

No decoder card, but with today's processors, one really isn't necessary anyway.

I just ordered the 16x from Newegg... should be getting it Tuesday.

the 12x rips dvd's faster then the 16x's dont know why but it does.. done some testing w/ these at work

onza

ishmaelLeaver, what gives you the idea that the drive with the decoder is black?
if it is true, i'm all over it cause my box i'm building has a black case

Hi All! I have the 12X Toshiba DVD-ROM Drive, and I must say that it is excellent overall. The spinup times are fast and quiet, and reading various media does not seem to be a problem. As for the drive being black, I am quite sure that this is not true, since I am assuming that the model of the drive is SM1402B, and the letter B denotes "bulk" rather than "black" if this is the case.
