Annihilation - 6/10

It was pretty good but suffered from pacing and tone issues and then the final act went way off the deep end. I get that it was what the director was going for, but I wasn't captivated and came out of the theater with a shrug from myself and my friend.

It sucks Rome never "finished", that show was awesome.

Yeah - that was a major bummer. (Much like Deadwood for that matter)
Go back and watch it though. Like I said - still very good, but something is "off" based on today;s quality of shows.

Bummer - was hoping this would be a solid movie. Guess I'll wait for home viewing.

Alright Homerboy... I took your word on Veep and you were mostly right. I'll check out Deadwood next.

LOL "mostly right" ;)
100% on RT. 9/10+ everywhere else. Deadwood is a safe bet. Unquestionably the best dialogue in any TV show ever.

JD Martinez? Screw you and your Red Sox.

Black Panther - 2/10 -
I have never been so bored in a movie before. I actually fell asleep. I don't get it. What's so great about this movie? The action scenes were at many times unwatchable. I couldn't see WTF was going on. Just bodies jerking from left to right. And the story ,,, meh.... nothing special.

Just more Hollywood cookie cutter crap unless I missed something. The best part was the Death Wish trailer. I hope it is not a trash movie .... but it will be. Oh, the Solo trailer ... YAWN

Yeah I think it's the best show ever on TV. It's just fucking brilliant in every frame.

I'm right at the kidney stone story line part. Just too damned funny/painful.
I love how everyone around him is acting - scared/confused/scared/scared.

Suicide Squad

I enjoyed it. I'm tired of the average superhero flick, and this is a bit grittier, and the bad guys generally seem to have realistic and consistent motivations. I hoped Guardians of the Galaxy would be more like this, but that ended up following the usual superhero formula.

On a separate note, I've never watched a film with Daniel Day-Lewis in. Recommendations please! (PM if muddying the thread with semi-off-topic posts is a concern)

That's.... horrible.
My Left Foot
There Will be Blood
Last of the Mohicans
Gangs of New York
A Room with a View
The Crucible
Lincoln
In the Name of the Father

Every movie he's in is great. Not because the movie had any business being a great movie, but with him in it, he makes it great.

My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman
100/10 (no typo)

*** warning *** - The entire show is quite left-leaning. So if you don't like that, and are not open minded, don't watch it.

I watched the 1st two episodes immediately as they were released. Letterman is in top notch form. Impeccable in whit, timing and intelligence.
First guest is Obama. Second is Clooney. 3rd will be Malala Yousafzai (releasing in March). Only 1 episode a month.

It's simple. Straight forward. Thought provoking and it seems to be quite cathartic for not only Letterman (with that wise-old-man-beard) but his guests too.
Great write up on it here: https://www.theverge.com/2018/1/12/...h-david-letterman-review-barack-obama-netflix

Everything I've read about Phantom Thread made me think I would hate it. Did you leave that off for a reason?

Haven't seen it. Obviously, it's gotten solid reviews, but some good friends who I trust said "meh". I'll watch at home I guess. I generally don't miss his movies.

I'm not a huge DDL fanboy, just a fan, but he was great in Last of the Mohicans and There Will Be Blood. Gangs of New York too but I like the previously mentioned two films much more, especially Last of the Mohicans. What a great, classic film.

At least the writers knew Rome was being cancelled going into or midway through writing the second season, so there is an "End" to it, even if that season sorta fast forwards and jumps around to make that happen. Deadwood leaves too much hanging, imo.

Did you know that Swearengen's dialogue is written in iambic pentameter? People maybe like to think that he is a crass fellow injecting filth into the Bard's preferred meter...but such people likely aren't all that familiar with the vulgarity of Shakespeare.

i happily sat down to another episode of Montalbano.

things to know.

1.this is - in my not-so-humble opinion - the best thing to come out of Italian cinema in the last few years. I generally hate italian crap, be it TV or Film. This is in another league.

2. it's in Italian, but available with subs. You do lose a lot of the quality of dialogue .. the episodes are based on the books by Camilleri, who is our P.G. Woodhouse .. his dialogue is exquisite.

3. we only get TWO episodes a year. Each is about 2 hours, recurring characters, high budget production; BUT, as it's set in a semi-ficticious late 90s Sicily, this is closer to a period drama than to a Giallo police drama.

4. it's really good.

the acting is top notch, the stories full of intrigue and gravitas, the casting is perfect, the supporting actors are excellent, the direction, pacing ..
If you thought Murder On The Miscast Express was good, this stuff isn't for you.
if you imagine you would like Ian McKellen playing a bum on a Waiting For Godot stage production, you will love Inspector Montalbano.

linkity link to Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inspector_Montalbano_(TV_series)

it's pretty easy to find, legitimate, on many streaming services (i don't know which one near you has it) because it was sold in syndacation or something like that. the BBC iPlayer had it for free (and they often put it back up), Amazon has it on AmaVideo (i just made up that name Amazon, now pay me) .. you can find it, if you look.

The original,(not the new one) Blade Runner. It was ok, but I really don't see what all the hype was about. Maybe I feel this way because I didn't see it when it came out?

6/10

That's a problem with watching many old movies. It's influenced so many other films and TV shows that it seems ordinary to you because of seeing its descendants first.

2001 had amazing visual effects for its time and warned us about the dangers of AI, Star Wars introduced the "used future" look for sci fi (before it most SF had everything shiny, new and spotlessly clean), Blade Runner introduced a gritty, grimy and multi-ethnic urban underclass with the powerful living in luxury up above them. They seem slow-paced and unoriginal to many first-time viewers decades later.

When I watch some old black-and-white movie I have to try to keep in mind what I know of the world at that time, both the setting and the actual world of the film makers and audience. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I love Blade Runner, I absolutely love Star Wars, I cannot stand 2001 Space Odyssey. It's so damn boring to me and most of my favorite movies are older than it. I'm sure if I was born in the time to be able to see it new I would appreciate it more but that's the only thing people say about it, the visuals. It's an extremely boring movie.

Journey Quest on prime 7/10

Its from 2010-13 and might have been a internet show but If you ever played D&D or like fantasy books and movies etc you might like this simple funny romp through Farheall. Its not a huge budget production and doesn't take itself too seriously but at least for me it's very entertaining once I got into the quarkery.

"Following a group of dysfunctional adventurers on a quest to discover and destroy the mythical Sword of Fighting, JOURNEYQUEST is a comedic adventure through the fantasy world of Fartherall, where intellectual orcs, incompetent wizards, and holy zombies from the living (and not-so-living) backdrop to an epic story of unrequited love, burning passions, and severely reluctant heroism. And running away. Lots of running away"

Actually it looks like all the episodes are on Youtube atm.

i agree with Dave^ but also, BR1 is essentially the same type of film as the Hard Boiled Detective films genre, which ran between 1930 all the way to the 70s. It's both a great homage and a unusual reimagining, this coupled with the aforementioned stunning visual effects, acting, story, the Vangelis soundtrack, and the awesome Tears In The Rain monologue, makes BR1 one of the best films ever for cinephiles.
