Tonight i got lined up Stardust (2007 Tom Hildbrandt film where he chops up stuff with a big ol' sword) www.imdb.com/title/tt0486655/

because i watched a review of the sword itself on Matthew Jensen's channel https://www.youtube.com/user/Krunan
he does reviews of sword stuff. He's also a fairly competent iaido practitioner so he understands what a sword is and what is it supposed to do; but sometimes he's throw in a weird sword like this one.

swords are cool. guns might be cool to but swords are so much more manly.

Stardust is likely going to suck hard.

I guess the only film i've seen lately that fits my idea of "good film" has been The Hippopotamus. Can't really think of any other.

It didn't age well - that's for sure. But keep in mind that thing is 45 years old now.
That's one of my all time favorites that was aired on Saturday afternoons back in the early 80s. Old man would fall asleep on the couch watching it and I'd sit on the floor with Yul Brynner freaking me out.

Can't argue with that. If I watched it as a kid in the 80s, I'm sure I would have loved it.

Watched a few "recent" movies.

Planet of the apes - War for the planet - 5/10. Holly smoke, who wrote the stupid scrip. Woody H as the crazy Col. the blonde little girl, then the rebel military in a base, not making sense. Horrible comparing to the first one.

Watched all the Cloverfield series on Netflix. The shaky original, the claustrophobic second, the futuristic third.

I wished there was better connection between the three, but I thought they were all very entertaining to watch. 8 to 9 out of 10.

I'm trying to watch Fear the Walking Dead but the idiot plot is so strong with this show that I'm not sure I can take much more. I've watched about 5 episodes.

Throughout the first couple of episodes characters are constantly doing the opposite of what any sane human being would do. If one more person slowly walks up to a snarling, drooling zombie and asks "are you ok?" I really will be done with it.

The family drama is a bit much as well. Did the show really need a heroin addicted son and two wives?

Does it get better?

Well, the point of "horror" films is that in the universe of the film the thing that is causing the horror doesn't exist. So if you consider it from that perspective it actually becomes really interesting.

Think for example if something came to our irl universe that we actually can't even comprehend. how would we react?

The show isn't great, but for my money its better than the original WD.

For the people who were curious about Phantom Thread with live orchestra, it was last night. The orchestra was great, and not a distraction at all, but the film's audio was not very good because it was shown in an opera theater that didn't seem equipped well enough to show a film properly. I was on the balcony and the speakers were all down below and up front so some of the dialogue was muffled. I should have gotten an orchestra seat

That's a shame. Sounds like they almost got it right, but you really have to make it work for the entire audience if you are going to do it. Would you go to another one?

I can tell you one thing though: If I encounter a snarling, drooling, lurching, growling thing I'm not walking towards it in any universe. I don't care if its my mother.

And now one of the kids is seeing someone sending morse code from a house in the dead zone, and his dad stupidly dismisses it. I already know what's coming next: the idiot kid os going to go out on his own to find out who's sending it (don't tell me if that's what really happens).

They definitely do their best. They posted a pic of a dress rehearsal with PTA observing (he didn't stay for the screening afaik). I think it was the venue that was the problem, and it wasn't exactly terrible.

I'd probably only go to something I've seen already. I would have loved to see Moonlight when they did that. $45 for a balcony seat. Orchestra $95. They are doing it in LA soon, I'm not sure if they always do LA + NY

The Rift: Dark Side of the Moon: 2/10

The most offensive part of this movie is the random music that plays throughout. Tense scenes would have 90s oasis or dance music playing prominently. This is supposed to be a horror flick but it seemed like the producer or director was obsessed with audio tracks more than anything. And they suck at it. You have to see it to fully understand what I'm talking about. Actually don't, it will infuriate you. This is a true B movie, which brings me to the argument that there's a reason why the masses stick to big production movies.

I don't know why there is so much crap on Netflix. I haven't found anything good for days. Just a bunch of shows or movies I give up on 30 minutes in. It's getting pretty ridiculous.

Saw Apocalypto last night on BBC America. Was the second time I saw this movie. Pretty awesome. My fav part is when the two Aztecs? and the Mayan? both stop running and see the Spanish ships and the Spanish come to shore. Movie has so many meanings. 10/10.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

adult-orientated action flick comedy no-brainer. For someone like me who is bored to tears with PG-style comic book movies, this was a refreshing change. The trailer made it look like a virtually identical re-tread of the first film, but thankfully it wasn't. Some plot elements awkwardly sit into the bigger picture, but nothing that breaks the film IMO.

Interestingly, I thought since I was back watching Deadwood, I'd re-watch HBOs other smash hit from that era "Rome"
I LOVED Rome when it originally aired. It really hasn't stood the test of time too well. It's still good and decent but for as expensive that it was and how realistic it was portrayed as, there's just something "off" about it. Still very good. Just not as magical as I recall.

It sucks Rome never "finished", that show was awesome.
