Gravity 8/10

Only has a few moments that break the immersion. Most are forgivable, like the camera getting "distracted" by something else moving past so that it doesn't just sit there the full amount of time it takes an astronaut to get out of a suit. Less forgivable was some of the obviously-forced expository dialog at the beginning. It shouldn't be too hard to break the backstory info up and deliver it more naturally over the course of the movie. Hire another writer! There is a Deus Ex Machina moment that also seemed to be in bad taste, especially because anyone with two brain cells was already saying "WTF?!" before it is revealed. Was there some reason they couldn't have flashbacks, a text introduction, narrator, before/after scenes or something else? There are a lot of other loose ends they could have tied up with some of those tropes instead of using the worst kind.

It sounds like I didn't like it, but the rest of the film was as amazing as I was told to expect. Great movie!

I gotta say, I cracked up when
the robot punched through the building, and was *just* far enough to start the kinetic ball thing. Absolutely ridiculous, but I found it humorous.

I didn't think that was all that funny, but it was mildly creative.

Oh I also thought the Ender's Game trailer looked awful. Same with The Monuments Men.

Unless I hear raves, I think I'll be skipping those two.

I'm a big Idris Elba and Charlie Hunnam fan but Pacific Rim was still a stinker of a movie. 4/10

Ugh, where were you guys when ATOT praised the movie all that much back when it was released?

This movie was awful. I couldn't finish it. I don't really plan on finishing it.

RUSH - 8.5/10

Very well directed. Great cinematography. Another great Hans Zimmer soundtrack. Great performance by Daniel Brühl. But at its core it is a racing movie and therefore the film is readable with echos of "Days of Thunder" etc. But it's better.

Rurouni Kenshin TV - 8/10
It tried a bit too hard to be comedic early on, and the end wrapped up too quickly. But it's a good series overall.

Rurouni Kenshin OAV - Trust and Betrayal - 9.5/10
Much more serious than the series. Great story, but even just watching the dub I can tell the translations weren't as good as they could've been.

Great performance by Daniel Brühl.

I thought it was pretty crazy how much he ended up looking like Lauda.

Which end are you referring to? The end of the Kyoto Arc, which is where the series deviates from the manga, or the silly Black Dragon junk? :p The real end of Kenshin is in the Seisouhen OVA.

Rurouni Kenshin OAV - Reflection - 7.5/10
While Trust and Betrayal really stood on its own (even as a prequel), Reflection is to Kenshin as Advent Children is to FF7: you really need to have watched the series to understand what's going on, in spite of the fact it's very flashback-heavy. The pacing left a lot to be desired.

The Worlds End. 4.5/10.

Was not funny at all. The story is sooo LAME lol!
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORing!

If you liked hot fuss then I guess go ahead and watch it.

I agree and was really disappointed. I was expecting a lot of funny from this movie and it failed. I was very ready for it to be over long before it actually was. I thought Your Highness was much funnier.

Oh I also thought the Ender's Game trailer looked awful.

The problem with the Ender's Game trailer is that it makes the movie out to be your generic "Hero is chosen to save the world!" story with enough explosions to give Michael Bay a wet dream. Anyone that has read the book knows there's no "Hero is chosen" crap in it. (This is talked about in the beginning of the book...)
His parents were allowed to have a third child because while both Peter and Valentine (Ender's siblings) were considered brilliant and great candidates, they ultimately failed for being too sadistic and too compassionate (respectively).
Explooosions? There's very little of that in the book. Heck, given the book was written in the late 80s, I recall the description of the space battle game from Command School looking more like 3D Space Invaders. :p (End of book spoiler...)
Making it look more realistic actually probably ruins the twist at the end where Ender finds out that the "game" was actually him controlling real ships and fighting against real enemies.

The book does have a heavy focus on Ender's thoughts throughout the whole ordeal, and I'm really curious to see how they portray that. I read Marvel's comic adaption (split into Battle School and Command School), and I was not impressed. Frankly, I thought it was downright awful, and I have a bad feeling that the abbreviation found in the comic will be similar to that in the movie.

Your Highness? That movie was godawful. I saw that in the theater in a double-header with the movie Arthur, and I thought Arthur was a better movie. Yeah... that's not saying much.

Weird, I never read the book, but that ending is what I assumed happened in the film just by watching the movie trailer.

There's also no way I can watch that kid on screen for two hours.

going to see Gravity this weekend--we have a few Atmos theaters around, but can't find a 2D + Atmos showing. Will have to suck it up and deal with the 3D horseshit.

anyhoo:

Louie: 9/10 I've been slowly catching up to this show as it is released on Netflix. I thought season 1 was very good, season 2 was great, but season 3....just goddamn brilliant. It's honest, funny and much better at being real + funny that Seinfeld was (yes, we all know that Seinfeld--the show--was never "real").

David Lynch! are you shitting me?

I just finished season 2 of Louie and am getting ready to dig into season 3. Easily one of the best shows on TV.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised, esp. if you enjoy the art of filmmaking.

I would beg to differ with you on the comparison to 'Days of Thunder.' DOT was a movie based on completely fictional characters. 'Rush' on the other hand was based on the actual 1976 Formula One World Championship and Niki Lauda and James Hunt were real people (Niki Lauda is still alive), the danger was real, the story was real and the movie was pretty true to life and very true to the '76 F1 season.

'Rush' is not just better, it is excellent. I loved this movie.

Great interview with Niki Lauda on the movie.

That has nothing to do with it. I'm just not a big fan of kids and stories about kids.

KT

It doesn't really read like a story about kids. It reads like a story about people who just so happen to be in that age category (not much childhood drama going on). If you just can't stand the kids part, the rest of the Ender's Series is primarily about adults (excepting Ender's Shadow which runs parallel to Ender's Game).
