SAMSARA 10/10 The director describe this movie as "A nonverbal guided meditation through life, death, and rebirth". I bought this movie on bluray since I am a very huge fan of Baraka, the director's previous work, or spiritual prequel to Samsara. For anyone with an open mind and a respect for technical cinematography, this is an excellent and compelling film. Also, the Blu-ray is my new benchmark movie to show off picture quality and sound. Home Theater junkies should not miss this one.

CLOUD ATLAS 10/10 I don't understand why anyone would hate this movie. My minor complaints are the make-up effect was rather low-budget looking, and the acting of some of the younger actors were pretty bad, but minor complaints. The interwoven stories resonate with so many different themes, yet all share the same profound message that there is a lot of good in humanity, because ultimately we are a progressive kind.

The Host(2011,Korean) - 7.5/10

Good monster movie, with a dose of comedy on the side. The monster is cool.. CGI was OK; a bit dated, but acceptable. It has got some pacing issues and would've been happier if the movie was 20 mins shorter.

The poster is a bit deceiving in that the monster looks like a octopus, but it is like a cross between a lizard and a tadpole. In addition to the monster the characters are likeable - a bit on the goofy side, but it helps in adding comedic element to the movie.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie and appreciated for what it is.

Interesting that you just now watched that movie. It's actually from 2006 and the sequel was just let out as being in production. Here's a short clip of the upcoming movie.

Finished Watching two movies this week:

Judge Dredd - Give it 8/10 (2 Points for it being too short... need more DREDD!) The action is just good and the charachters are just... EVIL.

Looper - 9/10 (The ending made me go :'() The story is a nice take on time travel but so many holes in the paradox phenomena that it just becomes a bit cheesy but the action and acting was just 12/10!

House - 10/10. Watched all 8 seasons and never got bored at any point...That has to be full marks.

Azorian: The Raising of the K-129 - 7/10
Interesting documentary I watched on Netflix. It's about a secret project to raise a sunken Soviet submarine during the Cold War. I have no idea why some of those engineers seem familiar.

Raid Redemption 10/10

Interesting fighting scenes. Has an actual story for being so much action. I love when I end up rooting for the bad guy near the end.

Rec3 : Genesis 8/10 so far

Watched about 30 minutes into this with my girl and she was starting to get so scared from it because we are planning a wedding so I turned it off. Can't wait to finish. I like how they are transitioning from hand held camera to normal movie style back and forth. Makes it easier to watch over the first 2.

The Hobbit - IMAX 3D: 9.5/10

Wow, 11 years since I have been in the theater (last movie I watched was LoTR:TT) and not only was I blown away by IMAX, the 3D affect was amazing. I actually blinked a few times, dodging bats and arrows. Enjoyed the story and new characters mixed with the originals, would actually go see this one again, even at $14.50 a viewing.

Only downside was some blurriness with the glasses and not getting good seats near the back to take in the entire IMAX screen.

The Hobbit (3D HFR) - 7.5/10

Obviously amazing production values and good source material. The mix of childish humor and violent action was a bit.. weird. I'm sure they were trying to appeal to parents and kids, but it just didn't mesh well to me. The beginning felt pretty drawn-out - my son seemed to be getting bored after the first 30-45 minutes until the action picked up (excluding the opening on "Ironforge".)

The 3D was well-done - I like to think that's we've standardized on how to correctly do 3D without forcing scenes where spears come flying out of the screen on purpose. It's been regulated to a feature/tool, and not the main attraction.

The HFR was... interesting. It was very jarring at first - everything seemed to be moving in 1.5x fast-forward. I got used to it after 15-20 minutes, but some scenes just seemed to have that fast-forward feel that made them seem.. fake. It could have also been a product of the CGI as well, I suppose. The whole movie felt too "clean." Kind of like the original Star War trilogy versus the prequels. Everything appeared to be CGI. For some reason, I remember the LotR having a more gritty/dirty feel to them, while this one was super-saturated with colors and clean lines. Again, this isn't LotR and isn't supposed to be, but it looked noticeably different.

Anyway, 3 movies does seem a bit ridiculous for the source. I watched this one as a cheap matinee and I imagine the same for the others.

I can't disagree with you guys more about the Hobbit. It was long boring no story arc cheap looking costumes and production values. The 3D effect is nothing special just a gimmick and it wasn't even done well in the Hobbit unless you think that blurred backgrounds and giant 3D heads is well done. 2/10 > And to think that you have to sit through 2 more of these just to get to the end blahh..

You sure you didn't just go to a shitty theater? What's good 3D to you?

A good movie should stand on it's own. It would make me notice the lacking presentation of the theater rather than fault the movie. The theater's presentation didn't affect the story arc, length, character development, script, etc. Any issues with sound or image quality would require repeated viewings on other equipment to blame on the producers.

Been working through my Netflix queue lately, trying to watch some of the more obscure indie stuff. Here's a couple that pleasantly surprised me:

Take Me Home- 7/10 Story about a guy who drives an illegal taxi in NYC and one night picks up a Type-A woman who needs to get to California (the story actually works somewhat plausibly) so they drive. Part Due Date (Downey Jr/Galfianakis movie) part RomCom. But very light on the Rom and subtle on the Com. No real LOL moments but got plenty of smiles from me. Heartfelt and simple story, some decent cinematography and a good soundtrack. Was good for burning through on a cold boring night.

Stuck Between Stations- 7.5/10 Much like above, not a RomCom, but has elements of one. Been compared to Before Sunrise/Sunset. Guy meets old high-school Crush when returning to town ten years later. They spend a night wandering around and talking, as their personalities (individually and together) follow an arc. Importantly: She is not an MPDG, so film stays credible. As above, fantastic (mostly natural light) cinematography via Red camera, great score. Lead actors are convincing. Moving story that avoided the trite nature most of these type of movies do. Would definitely recommend to fans of the indie film movement.

Reservoir Dogs: 8/10

Finally got around to seeing this. don't know why i wait so long or didn't have any interest in all the years since this was released, but i did enjoy it quite a bit. Tarantino's got a sick talent with the way he directs.

Was there anything besides the actors that was not CGI in SW: episodes 1-3? I think you meant to say you noticed how everything is CGI in episodes 1-3.

Ted - 3/10. Not nearly as funny as expected. Story is as predictable as they come.

Dredd - 5/10. Not as good as I'd been led to expect. I would have really liked a greater exploration of the future world vs. the very small plot.

Pitch Perfect - 8.5/10

Probably going to catch a lot of flak for this, but this movie was awesome. Think of it as a more adult-oriented Glee, except not as lame. It helps that Anna Kendrick is one of my favorite actresses in that age range ever since Up in the Air, and the blonde girl acted her role very well (don't remember her name, she was the pastor's wife in True Blood when Jason went to the crazy church cult camp thing, also, Bethany something in Mad Men), and Rebel Wilsom as Fat Amy was hilarious.

Anyway, movie was entirely predictable, wasn't anything ground breaking, and took some time to get going, but #1 - I've got a soft spot for music movies (think Walk the Line, August Rush, Crazy Heart, Hustle & Flow, even Country Strong on the parts where Gwenyth Paltrow wasn't in it....) and #2 - there were so many one liners inserted throughout the movie that it was actually really funny. Some are pretty obvious, others are pretty subtle. My wife and I both enjoyed it quite a bit.

I've actually heard good things about this, sort of like the Bring it On of the A Capella world?

Something like that. I'd probably describe it something like Bring it On meets Glee meets A Capella meets ... something else (comedy).

The Glee comparison really is just about the general progression of the group formation and diversity and such, and aside from the musical competitions, that's about it. Imagine an adult-oriented season of Glee, smushed into a 2 hour movie without all the high school relationship drama or weird teachers.

I can't really make a comedy comparison. Rebel Wilson's character in PP reminds me a lot of Melissa McCarthy's character in Bridesmaids, but the comparisons between the two pretty much stop there.

I'm not really sure what else to compare it to -- it's sort of an awkward/subtle humor at times, other times it just comes right out and says it.

Body Double - 1984 - 7/10

Epic soundtrack - Seriously, if you have a home theater system you will enjoy the soundtrack. It really helps create the mood and moves the movie along.

Much like a Hitchcok movie - this had many twists and turns . Party Mystery, Part Horror, and part Porno fantasy.

Depalma really uses the camera effectively to help the viewer understand the gripping terror.

It's an old flick - some critics loved it, some critics hated it - doubt it could be made today without a NC-17 rating.

Raid Redemption 10/10

Interesting fighting scenes. Has an actual story for being so much action. I love when I end up rooting for the bad guy near the end.

I get the feeling that I'm the only person that didn't really care much for this movie. It probably didn't help that it was somewhat over-hyped by everyone saying how awesome and action-packed it is. Now, it's certainly action-packed, but I need more than just a barrage of a barrage of punches to entertain me. The characters were boring and mostly the equivalent of Star Trek red shirts, the story pretty much lulled after about ten minutes and picked back up in the last ten, and some of the fights just seemed a little too ridiculous.

The problem is that when the characters are boring, I don't care about them. If I don't care about them, I need something else to engross me in the movie. The plot or rather the plot's pacing was incredibly poor, which means it didn't help either. So, I pretty much sat there picking the movie apart after fight scenes started dragging on.

Also, when you have a movie full of people that look fairly similar to each other (they're all about the same size, similar complexion and have black hair), try using some sort of indicative marking to let us easily realize who the guy we're supposed to care about is. Oh, and make sure it's easy for us to keep track of (not like John Carter's Red vs. Blue)... perhaps a patch that says "Good Guy" would work!

A lot of people like to compare it to Dredd, and while Dredd is definitely not perfect (it needed some script work to beef up the characters a little bit), I got to spend the entire movie drooling over Olivia Thirlby!

Melanie Griffith as a porn star...I watched this on HBO like a million times as a kid. Probably why I am somewhat of a pervert. lol

I'm with you on The Raid; I thought it was ok, but kind of boring. Not something I will ever go out of my way to re-watch.

LotR was to The Hobbit as EP 4-6 were to EP 1-3

We all knew know what I meant, regardless of what I said.. ;)
