Across the Spider-Verse - 9/10

I ding it 1 point for 2 reasons:
1. The sound mix is kind of f'd up. The dialog is difficult to hear at times. I am getting old, my hearing isn't what it used to be, but it seems to be a common complaint.
2.
To be continued... ugg...

Otherwise it is a brilliant movie. The animation is incredibly creative and beautiful.
I went to see it last night as well. I would probably rate it at 7/10. It was good, but not in the 'best movies of all time' good. It has a few plot problems, and of course the big problem you mention in your spoilers.

On a tangent, it seems that the trend in Hollywood is towards longer movies. I don't mind that. I would rather have the movie run an extra 30 minutes then them try to edit it down to some predetermined time frame. But, can we all just agree that if you are making a movie much longer than 2 hours you need a intermission in it?

@quikah @SMOGZINN

Please could you compare it to the first Spiderverse movie?
Similar in a lot of ways. Fast pace action with a lot of color and chaotic imagery, so much so that it can be hard to tell what is going on in some scenes. Lots of little easter eggs and inside jokes for the comic lovers. The first thing I said about the movie after leaving the theater was that for a 2.3 hour long movie it never slowed down. It is rare that a movie can be that fast paced and still feel like it managed both character development and a coherent plot.

1 point I will add is that while Miles is still the lead, Gwen plays a MUCH larger role in this one, at times focusing solely on her story. The animation was really incredible.

I saw Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 recently. Pretty good, probably 8.5/10. Very sad story though I thought. There seemed to be some plot holes in it, where I was thinking, wait, whatever happened to...?

Robocop (2014)

I just watched the 1987 version (again) followed by the 2014 version.

There are things I like about the first film, it's basically an action flick with elements of dystopia/scifi. I like the focus on how bad an idea it is for a corporation to have such sway in a society, but I think it doesn't go beyond being an action flick.

Robocop 2014 is a completely different film, take the basic elements of the first and that's about it. Corporate ethics and drawing a vague grey line between humanity and robotics and then fucking with it a lot are the main elements in this film. I really enjoyed it, I'd say it's better than the original.

Super Mario Brothers the .. thing. Film. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6718170/reference/

Hell naw.

I gave it a shot but it's line after line where i'm blanking the entire dialogue, i am 0% the target audience of this ... thing.

Tbh i am not sure exactly *who* would love SMB's IP so much that they want it moved over to a completely different product. I mean, i can understand, say, Dungeon & Dragons, but from an arcade game with almost zero dialogue, to a film?
And, whatever dialogue i did catch .. i don't even know if this is meant to be a comedy?

idk, i guess it's another product made for people who looooooove Chris Prat. Frankly i think his talent is up there with Any Schumer in the Top 10 List of People Who Should Not Exist. He .. he can't do anything. He can't act, he's not funny, he's got zero charisma and he has no. voice. talent.
Pretty fucking genius move to pair him with Ana Taylor Joy whose sole skill is looking good, in a role where we can't see her.

idk NO VOTE/10

Heh. It's for kids, and perhaps their parents who grew up with Mario. I'm not surprised you're not the target audience.

And it looks like Zelda is next up for a Nintendo movie.

Across the Spider Verse - 9/10

Agree with much of what's been said. I absolutely love the art direction, some scenes felt like museum pieces and it was a joy to just watch things play out even if I didn't care about what was going on.

Minus a point for some of the random plot devices and side quests which detracted from the main "bad guy" chase. Felt a bit all over the place at times.

Skyfall - It’s a Bond movie, checks all the boxes, goes on a bit longer than necessary but it’s okay. Based on the scuttlebutt at the time, I thought the island would play a bigger role. 7/10

i watched .. eh .. What Is A Woman. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt20256528/reference/

.. Barb'ra Streisand Effect. If you tell me Twitter is banning it as hate speech, then i'll want to see it.

For those not living on this planet, this is the equivalent of The God Delusion but against the .. vast majority of the modern LGBT spectrum instead of religion.

.. it's not great. It's not horrible either - being completely dispassionate about the subject - but i don't really see the point.

See, it's easy to pick the WORST representatives of one side. Oh yeah, because they very much exist. And while Walsh is subtle in not making a spectacle of them, he still manages to showcase some pro- representatives that are clearly out of touch with reality. And then he spikes that with anti- representatives who are solidly ground in science. That doesnt mean anything. It's cherrypicking and doesn't try to show a reasonable balance between those who are pro- and against, but at the same time not batshit insane. Where's Alex Jones and turning the frogs geh when you need him ? Why isn't he showing THAT side of the pray-the-gay-away crowd?

And it's basically meant to be a documentary, but without any impartiality which is the very foundation of good science.

6/10 if you wanna get riled up. 5/10 if you expect something that makes sense.

i TRIED to watch The Sixth Sense - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0167404/reference/

Yes, THAT film. The one with THAT actor and by THAT director.
But, i couldn't. I could not stop myself from constantly looking at the clues of the final reveal
where Bruce Willis doesnt directly interact with any other character
and that ruined it for me, because after all these years, i just casually absorbed pretty much the entire film from random snippets.
Also .. it's slow. I mean, it's a suspense-drama with some horror tones, so i can understand this being slow. But the combination of slow + i really just want to get to the end made it even worse.

No vote. Too late to appreciate this film.

That movie is the only one I can think of where knowing the twist ruins the movie, though I suspect the actual problem with it is that it just isn't a very good movie in the first place.

I saw it at the cinema.

Watch Unbreakable and try not to get too curious :)

Yes, it's a slow movie again but it kinda keeps you at the edge of your seat.

And this one wasn't too bad either: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0949731/reference/

His other recent ones are also somewhat bearable, like Split, The Visit, Glass, Old etc.

He is probably one of the very few directors who could turn a superhero movie into a snoozefest :D

I'm having a hard time thinking of a movie with a twist that isn't made worse knowing the twist. Hell, sometimes just knowing there is a twist at all can hurt a movie.

In advance, sure. I meant whether it hurts the movie's enjoyability after the first viewing. Plenty of films in my collection have twists.

Funnily enough, I forget the twists after a few years. I can often realize that I've seen the movie before but it's rare that I remember what happens at the end.

I bought the bluray this past weekend and watched it for the 2nd time. I liked it just as much as the first time if not more since I picked up even more easter eggs the 2nd viewing.

And I can't stand Chris Pratt.
