The Hurt Locker - 6.0/10
At least the basic tension of bomb defusal was had in this movie...but knowing a thing or two about Army procedure, there were just too many plot devices done in a stupid manner to fully enjoy it. James (Jeremy Renner) simply isn't a believable EOD character, he's too cavalier toward everything.
Seriously, going down three alleyways individually, at night, without cover? No fucking wonder Eldridge got hauled away. And that's just the start on my complaints.
It's not a bad movie, but certainly not worth all the acclaim it got. Kathryn Bigelow just got too much credit for this one.

Well if it went all the way with the crazy and was just a balls out michael bay then yea, I'd understand the bs stupid inaccuracies, but since it was sold as true to life then it just was a load of bull.

Shadows & Lies - 4/10

I only watched it because I saw James Franco was in it...figured I'd give it a shot. I shouldn't have. The writing was poor, the storyline was average to poor, the score was horrendous, the acting was sometimes alright, sometimes average, sometimes poor. The writer/director obviously was trying way too hard to create an "artsy" type film filled with questions and starts with absolutely zero backstory. The only backstory filtered into the film as it goes along only confuses the story more and offers nothing to the viewer to push it forward. I like dramas and mysteries and "artsy" films, but ones that don't try to force it.

The music/score...holy crap was it bad. Just flat out annoying. Organ playing one single note for an entire scene? Annoying. I actually got to the point where I fast forwarded to the scenes where nothing was happening but a closeup and one single note playing for 2-3 minutes, it was so annoying.

The cinematography was decent, and Franco wasn't terrible, which is the only reason it gets a 4 instead of a 2. Even if you are a Franco fan, though, don't waste your time.

Not sure what this Letterboxd service is all about but if it's movie related, and someone has a spare invite, please throw one my way. Thanks!

It's basically a site to review/rate movies with some twitter-like social media aspects. The interface of it all is very nice and easy. Works like it should

I don't have any invites yet but I'll keep an eye out

Army of Shadows - 9.5/10:
Wow what a movie. I was in awe through a lot of it; Melville was a fucking master, it's a shame he died early.

The movie is about a group of French resistance fighters during the war.

To say it's a beautiful movie isn't doing it justice. The great French scenery and amazing direction, wow. The movie itself is riveting, thrilling. There's one scene near the beginning that's particularly great. Really great acting from a bunch of good characters. I just finished watching it so I'm a bit short on words, but amazing amazing movie.

Amazing film. I really love the scene where they escape from custody, the way everything plays out is amazing and how he films it is perfect.

Anybody see Raiders on Blu-ray yet?

Screenies dont really look impressive.

I did not think it was out yet. Definitely looking forward to it.

Tron 6/10 - I've never seen the original Tron so I have to admit I'm missing some of the back story here, but knowing it wouldn't have made for a better film. Besides which they recap most of it for you, rather poorly. The basic story goes that software guru Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) created a wildly popular video game craze back in the late 80s with his game Tron. But more than that he found some way of digitizing himself and entering the world of computers itself. All of this is very vaguely explained and makes little sense, and arguably for a film like this it doesn't need to. Anyway Kevin has this hippie inspired dream of creating the perfect digital world and bringing the fruits of his labor back to the real world to cure all disease and end all suffering. The hippie overtones are not at all subtle, down to a faux zen overtones and frequent use of "hay man". Bridges is almost reprising his role as The Dude here. Of course his utopia turns into a dystopia and he ends up trapped in and by his creation. It's left to his son Sam Flynn (plaid rather blandly by Garrett Hedlund) to rediscover his lost father and save the day. Of course the film is all about its visuals and while there are some aspects that stand out, it's really mostly just what you would expect. Tron updated with 2011 special effects. Which isn't entire a bad thing, I was still captivated by the visuals for a good 1/3rd of the film. Aside from visuals only other thing about the film that stands out at all is its audio score by Daft Punk which does lend some scenes a nice ethereal feel. You might say I went in expecting too much. After all what can one expect from a remake of Tron? Well not much, but at the very least it should be entertaining, sadly while the visual and aural experience is largely there the acting is so wooden and hackneyed that I found it difficult to really be engaged by any of this.

I liked it. The original Tron was not an amazing film, but as a kid I loved it; definitely looked cool, so it sucked me in. The new film was kind of the same for me; not a great movie, but it looked really cool and was pretty fun.

I think we're talking about the same scene. That was by far my favorite part.

but I wonder if the other guy made it out alive. and I also wonder whether Gerbier used him intentionally as a decoy

I'm not sure what exactly it was, but Melville set the mood perfectly in every scene. From the prisons to the airplane scene, everything felt so right, perfectly set scenes. So much/many emotion at all times

Greenberg - 5.9/10 - Did not like. Very too intentionally quirky. Didn't think the interactions btw Stiller and Gerwigs characters were natural. No real plot or character development either. Not sure if the viewer is supposed to be able to relate to the characters, I certainly did not.

The Help - 7.3/10 - Good, but not great to me. The characters aside from Emma Stone + the 2 main maids all felt like caricatures which kept me from really getting immersed in the story.

Good question, but I guess it was every man for himself at that point.

I really need to watch Le Cercle Rouge.

I liked the new tron, but I was expecting it to be bad so that might have helped. Low expectations and all that. Really, it was one of the more visually impressive films. I wouldn't say beautiful (like the Fall which I am going to mention below), but the light cycle race and a lot of other scenes were mesmerizing.

Movies I've seen:
Underworld Awakening: 5/10 - This was pretty shaky, plot felted rushed, action wasn't that great though it had its moments. The movie just felt disjointed and had a lot of "AHA LOOK AT THIS PLOT TWIST" type mechanics that didn't really come off as that big of a surprise and felt a little lame.

The Fall - 8.5/10 - This was an amazing movie. It was slow a bit at the start but it was an absolutely gorgeous film. It had a compelling story and was well acted. The fantasy story/real life blur worked for me, and again the visuals were stunning and the colors were beautiful to look at.

Date Night - 6/10 - I actually enjoyed the film though I'd say it was a little weak. It's just a popcorn flick with no particularly developed or engaging story line, and it's a bit over the top at times. The action and some of the story elements require... extreme suspension of disbelief, but it still worked over all for me. I think I liked Mr and Mrs Smith a lot better for movies in this vein.

Anyone have a spare Letterboxd invite, pretty please?

:beer;

Also, my wife and I are looking to have an actual date night this coming weekend, been probably 6 months since our last one and was wondering if there's any "must see" movies out currently?

I'm very out of the loop of whats out now days.

This has become my life, having a 2.5 year old and only watching shows from my DVR (never see commercials).

Hugo 7/10: Good, bit underwhelming. Good to see Ben Kingsley since House of Sand and Fog.

The Descendants 8/10: A tragic drama with lots of off-beat humor thrown in. Uses the backdrop of Hawaii beautifully. The whole cheeky yet serious tone is reminiscent of Win Win (great film). Clooney is solid as he was in Up in the Air. I love plain human drama movies like these.

Revenge of the Nerds - 7.5/10

I enjoyed this movie quite a lot. I think it has a lot to do.. my hate for bullies.. I fucking hate bullies. Performances are not note worthy, but there are a lot of funny moments to keep the viewer entertained.

Let The Right One In - 9/10
Now this...this is a good modern vampire story. Character-driven, not reliant on special effects, generally down-tempo, yet still morbidly fun and engaging, with a perfect ending.

Let Me In - 7/10
The good: unlike some borrowed movies, they did a good re-envisioning of it in terms of characters and culture. The cast was excellent, especially Chloe Moretz. Kickass and this are all I've seen her in. I think about any short tomboyish actress could have played her part in Kickass about as well, but not Abby the vampire.

The bad: stop, stop, stop it with the orange and teal, and tinting colors! Orange and teal everywhere has looked bad since you guys started doing it, and it won't look better by doing over and over again! Also, what's the point of making a movie with great modern camera equipment, only to add brown and urine color tinting to half the shots, and this bloom-like soft focus crap, so much that it ends up looking like film shot in daylight with heavy filters added? They had to do it that way until just some years ago. Trying to get that look with current technology does not look good, is distracting, and is a complete waste. Seriously, all the people responsible for this (directors? camera people? others in post-processing?) need to go mentor under the Downton Abbey* staff, Robert Rodriguez, and others (like the makers of the original this copies) that actually do decent jobs at using current technology without abusing it. Making colors pop, and tinting a little, is fine, but not all knobs need to go to 11. Finally, I could have done without the low-tone loud music and zoom shots to add suspense, and cheesy foley sound effects. This isn't a jump-out-of-your-seat suspense/slasher flick.

* P.S. beware: if you watch the whole first episode, you will find yourself needing to watch the rest

Paul - 4/10: So disappointing. I know this had not received great reviews, but I'd held out hope that it was just misunderstood or something, unfortunately the reviews were right. It was a nice, charming movie, that I didn't hate but it really was just not very funny aside from a few throw away jokes here and there. I even liked most of the characters, but it all felt quite bland. Considering the people involved, I was hoping for so much more but was left feeling very disappointed.

Not really too many must sees out there right now. Some good movies, but nothing incredible out there at the moment. The Grey has probably been my favourite movie from the theatres in 2012 so far. Solid movie. I do want to see Wanderlust too.

This Is Not a Film has been getting some great reviews. Limited release though, good luck finding it. KT probably saw it last year :p

It's been a slow slow year with wide releases so far.
