You're Next - meh/10
Follows a lot of cliches in the first half (ex. characters making terrible decisions) and then after the twist you know almost exactly how the rest of the movie is going to play out. I think maybe I'm getting tired of the horror genre.

I think I'm going to stop watching horror movies. The Conjuring got insanely strong reviews and it was bland. You're Next is getting good reviews and the trailer is horrible. Fuck this, I'm out

The issue is you're watching mainstream horror. Watch things that aren't going to theater.

Oz the Great and Powerful 6/10 Script was decent enough, just not enough chemistry for my taste.

Olympus Has Fallen - 7.5/10 - I thought the dialog was better than expected for the genre. Appreciated the main character's coldheartedness. Probably could have trimmed 10 minutes out of it somewhere. Bad guy's plan was pretty good too.

Django Unchained - 9/10 - I'm ashamed to admit that I waited until last night to finally watch this. Great film.

The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 and 2 - 9/10

Awesome animated film but one thing I will never understand about these movies..

Joker goes on a murdering rampage basically executing every person he walks by. Batman kills him trying to stop him and they all turn on Batman. Its like if someone killed Osama bin Laden but they get arrested for it.

It is very rare to get horror movies right and most movies we like doesn't get mainstream acceptance.

I thought Conjuring was good FWIW, but the reviews are extremely deceiving(or maybe shows the quality of horror movies being made these days). Good thing, I guess, is that I didn't read a single review and didn't even watch the trailer for the movie.

pitch perfect - 7/10

it's a fun movie for what it is, but if you know what it's about and know you won't like that tyep of movie, then you probably will not like it. i'm not a fan of musicals at all but the singing in this was a lot of songs i knew and they were sounded okay. it was weird how it was supposed to be acapella but they had actual music playing most of the time when they were singing. i guess that was just for us as viewers though.

City of God - 10/10

I heard a lot of praise for this movie after it was released, and I've been meaning to watch it for a while now. For some reason or other I haven't gotten around to it. When a friend of mine told me recently that it was playing on one of the movie channels I decided it was finally time and set my Tivo to record it. And again I resisted: it's been sitting untouched on the HD for a few weeks. Last night I finally dove it and pressed play.

I still don't know exactly what it was that kept me from watching this movie sooner. Perhaps, deep down inside, I didn't want to subject myself to another one of those films that pushes the plight of poorer, violence-ridden countries and societies into our faces for the sole purpose of inspiring us to feel guilt. I have a lot of sympathies for people in these situations, but I mostly prefer to keep my entertainment on a different level. This is not exclusive to movies for me - I didn't get very far in Far Cry 2 either. I might have been able to deal with the sluggish gameplay if I hadn't been subjected to commentary on the plight of Africa at every single turn.

City of God is not one of those films.

Sure, we see some of the terrible things that arise out of a lawless society. But I never felt like I was being lectured about it. The film simply showed me what exists there, the rhythm of life in a place like a Brasilian Favela run by hoods and drug dealers. There are some unbelievably brutal scenes to watch, such as one in which a vicious drug lord seems to make a young child choose which of of his even younger friends he must kill as punishment for stealing. The very realistic crying of the kids as this happens is almost unbearable.

But it's all done with high energy and style, with gritty, believable characters. This is the second film I've seen in a short time that owes much to Pulp Fiction (the film's sections are announced by titles, and it plays with time in a similar way), but unlike so many ripoffs or homages that fact didn't bother me at all. In this case I'm glad it was.

While writing this I was torn about whether to give this film a 9 or a 10, but ultimately decided on the latter. Like all film that deal with violence it's not for everybody, and (unlike Pulp Fiction) I probably don't need to see it again. But it's going to stay with me for a long time.

Watch for a young Alice Braga.

I really like Woody Allen's "Blue Jasmine".
The old Woody comes thru.
Plus, you can't go wrong with Cate Blanchett.
Perfect casting.
So Woody, the part where Blanchett is with the two kids eating out, Blanchett starts talking grownup talk and relationship failures, mental breakdown Cate is actually talking to herself, but staring at the kids the whole time. And the kids faces, expressions back at her.
Pure Woody. The old Woody.

Yea, not typically my type of movie, but I was actually very surprised how much I enjoyed this.

Examples would be good.

Well, I'd have to think, but in this thread are many posted by myself and others. Granted, they are horror movies, not everyone likes the same kind. I tend to like B type movies with bad senses of humor and monster movies. Don't tend to like zombie/vampire/werewolf movies.

Splinter
Really good old school creature feature for a low budget movie.

Stake Land
Good post-apocalyptic vampire/zombie flick. Just a really well made movie with a good feel to it. Available for streaming on netflix

Werewolf: The Beast Among Us
Alright this one is a bit corny but I still really liked it. Also available for streaming on netlfix.

Slither
If you remember Night of the Creeps this is sort of like that. Another one that is kind of a horror comedy. Also streaming on netflix.

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil
And the cream of the crop. More of a horror comedy making fun of the standard campers vs crazy redneck style movie. This is a 10/10 or really damn close.

A few of the better lesser known recent horror movies I can think of.

I enjoyed this one quite a bit, probably give it 8.5/10 for entertainment value.

I'd recommend Ginger Snaps 1 & 2, despite your distaste for werewolf films.
