Now a good time to buy a kindle?

I just went to Amazon and saw there is a sale going on right now on the Amazon Kindle. (114$ 😀)

I always been meaning to buy it because of portability, comfort and just for the benefit of not having to carry books around.

So just wondering if right now is a good time to buy the kindle or should I wait for a newer version(?) to come out.

Uhm. Do you read more than 15 books a year? If so, then maybe.

Nah haha.

I just need to read some e-books for a class and I find staring at my computer monitor for a long period of time is straining for my eyes. Don't get me wrong of course I am still going to use it for leisure time. I have a lot of books I want to check out also.

I was hoping E-ink will be a better supplement.

there's always a new version on the horizon, but that'll be true even if you wait until Kindle 3.

I'm still rocking my 1st gen kindle and haven't really seen a reason to upgrade; I wouldn't hole back on one now if you want it/see a need for it in your life.

Publishers have fucked things to the point where it's not really worth it for saving money on books anymore, but you can't been the convenience and portability factor.

Oooh, yeah I think technically the newest Kindle is great. Thin and with a pretty good image. The page turning delay is not too annoying with this generation. The only complaint I have is that it does not support ePub. But I waited until this generation to get a Kindle and I use the damn thing constantly.

Can you download E-books from places other than Amazon and put it in your Kindle?

as far as I'm aware, you can, though I don't know specifically what formats it supports.

I want to say there's also a kindle-format converter program or something too.

i want a nook. 250 is a little expensive, but it has quite a few other features I find worth it as well. although the new cheap kindle is quite nice as well.

Yes, the Kindle can read Mobi format. So you can get free e-books from the Kindle store or from other sites like Gutenberg. Often the free ones on the Kindle store are the same as on other sites. Sometimes there will be versions that cost money on the Kindle store of classic books that can be found for free on Gutenberg. There are also other merchants that sell e-books in the Mobi format which you can then load on your Kindle. You can do this by either going to the website on your Kindle and downloading it directly or loading it onto your Kindle from your computer using the USB cable.

For me, I always use Amazon and Gutenberg since I can access them directly wherever I want since I have the 3G version. I didn't think that I would use the 3G as much as I have since I will often run out of books when I am on the bus or train.

The nook color isn't e-ink though, it's an LCD. So some people will get eyestrain from using it too much.

The $114 price is not a sale, it's the version that shows ads on the screen saver and menus (but not while reading a book)

Kindle can be used with public domain books from Project Gutenberg and DRM-free SF & fantasy from Baen.com but it will not work with DRM-protected ebooks from other companies like Barnes & Noble.

Kindle doesn't support epub? What kind of programs would convert epub to a format Kindle recognizes? Calibre?

Sure Calibre will do it.

$114 for a Kindle is awesome. If I didn't already have one I'd get the ad-supported one. Who cares what it displays when you aren't using it.

btw for those debating between a Kindle and a Nook, be sure to play with both. Better screen, 3x battery life, and 3.1 oz lighter made it easy for me to pick Kindle.

Thanks. Which file type do you convert to for Kindle? And it's easy to just throw the file on the Kindle after conversion ala flash drive-like.

I have the kindle 2 and love it. I read more now than I did before just because its so much easier to get books online or through teh library. The program "Calibre" will convert and ebook version to mobi (the amazon standard)

Yeah, the ease of buying books is very dangerous. It's a big hassle for me to get out to the main library and I have already exhausted the books of interest at my local branch and university library. So now I am reading a lot more because of the ease by which I can just get another book.

I just wish I could get Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey series on e-book. I can't find the whole set here whether via purchase or loan and was one of the reasons why I wanted a Kindle.

have you tried checking his website? i have found a few books i've wanted that weren't offered by amazon that way.

I don't really have any scenarios where I really need to have a book right this second. If so I could always use my phone as a last resort. Otherwise, I prefer having the actual book in my hand. Check your local borders, if it's closing, fire sale. Today might be the last day if they aren't closed already. Everything was $1.99 on Tuesday
