Yes I realize that in the future the X2 4400+ will be a better chip.

But for today's games and 3-4 months into the future, which chip will be better?

AMD A64 4000+ or the AMD X2 4400+?

I have the ASUS 32 SLI with 2 7800gtx 256MB, and 2 GB Ram.

I tried using the 4400+ a few months ago, but games like BF2 and DungeonSiege II kept locking up. I realize that I didn't install the correct drivers, etc. but it still didn't work too well.

So if you think the 4400+ is the best option, could someone let me know what the best way to install the 4400, and what drivers and options I need to do, to make the X2 work without locking up the games.

Thanks!

BTW, I am playing BF2, Dungeon Siege II, NFS Most Wanted, mostly new games, not many old games except

Hi, I have a 4400 X2 at stock and overclocked speeds 2.61ghz i've never had any problems with BF2 locking up. The only problem i had was with wow coninuously dropping but that was fixed by setting the affinity to 1 cpu instead of both cores. It might not have been the cpu causing the lock ups.

NVIDIA drivers have random BSOD probelms with dual core systems due to 'optimizations' with certain programs with the 8x.xx series. Only runs correctly if you run the 78.01's. Wish I knew about this problem before I got my opty165 dual core. Has been going on since sept no beta fixes all the problems. Just try running any version of PSP X or 9. I have been buying NVidia since riva 128 but no more.

Read the Hundreds of horror stories or don't.

I have a X2 4400+ and using NV Drivers 82.12. I have neither lock-up or BSOD when playing BF2 or any other game. Weird that some do and some don't.

I believe starting w/ 81.89 or 89.98, the drivers were optimized for dual-core cpus.

Going to buy such expensive CPU's for 3 - 4 months only...? Get yourself a cheap Venice and overclock it to the max... They still perform great, even in games where dual core starts to have an advantage (thinking of the Quake 4 dual core patch)...

I actually have both, bought the 4400, but had so many problems, I have been using the 4000+ in my shuttle XPC.

I just got the Asus a8n32 X16 SLI board, so I am trying to decided which one to put in the new board.

I mentioned the 3 - 4 months, because I really didn't want to get into the whole X2 is better for the future, I just want to be able to play the games with my Dell 24" LCD, which requires the high resolutions.

Thanks!

Man, either one of those is amazing! If you had problems with the X2, then take the 4000+... Maybe overclock it somewhat...

Well then your limiter will be your video cards, the CPU only becomes the bottleneck for gaming at low resolutions. So you aren't going to see any huge differances with either CPU even at stock speeds with high resolutions. The only exception would probably be quake 4 since it's dual core patched already. I have had no problems at all with my X2 and any games.

Can you let me know how you installed your OS and what drivers/patches, and in what order you installed everything.

Thanks!
