Novice question about my Leadtek 7800 GT

I've been trying to overclock my 7800 GT, which runs at 275 MHz when idle. I've noticed that when it's under load, the clock speed jumps to 491 MHz, even though I haven't changed the card settings from the defaults. Is this normal?

Yup, the 7800s have something called the "geometric clock delta" (ASUS's name) which boosts when it's in 3D and IIRC sometimes forgets to reduce it once you go in 2D. Still your card should be higher than 275 MHz at 2D even. The GCD was only like +50 MHz I think? You are talking about core speed?

Yeah, I'm talking about core speed. So it should be in the mid 400's at 2D?

Is it possible that your 2D settings in Coolbits got set to 275 MHz? You'll want to have someone with a 7800GT confirm the clock speed 3D adjustment amount, but I thought it was only 50 MHz.

First of all what are you using to read clocks and what are you using to overclock?

It adds a node to your ForceWare control panel on the left treeview called Clock Frequency Settings.

Use the Nvidia drivers from their website. They integrate temperature with their drivers

I don't think that I have the ForceWare control panel.

Yeah, you do. That place where you force AA/AF you know. Right click desktop, properties, settings, advanced, GeForce 7800GT. It's also right in the desktop right click menu most of the time as "NVIDIA Display"-->VESA monitor name.

Ah, yes. I installed Coolbits, which reports that the 2D frequency is 275 MHz.

Odd, but I'd leave it I suppose. It does save heat, and you don't need any of that speed in 2D. It could also be a misreporting. See if you can find anyone else with a 7800GT. You might have to change your topic to 'requesting all 7800GT owners'. Not sure if this affects just you, all Leadteks, that particular model, or every 7800GT in the universe. This is a 7800GT and not a 7800GTX? For now I'd leave it as it is. I don't want to tell you to raise it and have you end up with a paperweight for a reason I didn't know. If no one else has the problem, I'd call up tech support or RMA it. If you want to RMA you can't overclock at all so keep that in mind, which is one reason I'm telling you to leave it as is.
