I know a few CNAs and a CNE, we use Novell a good bit (too much IMHO) where I work.

NDS is light years ahead of AD, file and print sharing (their main gig) is fast as hell and is very reliable, right inheritance between directories and NDS objects actually makes sense. Technically it beats the snot out of NT as a file server, the licensing is a bastard though. Novell tries to tie everything to NDS, which is a good and a bad thing. Good because NDS is reliable and gives you automatic redundancy and the like, but bad because things like their DHCP server can only update NetWare DNS server are really annoying.

We use it almost exclusively for servers here at Clemson University (I've heard that we have on of the largest Novell networks in the US, but I'm not sure about that). The CompSci and Science/Engineering departments have a lot of Unix machines though (mostly Suns; there's a few SGi's and misc machines laying around).

I have been administering Netware since 4.11 . It is much easier and effective to administer than NT/Win2K .
The only way I finally understood AD was after I realized it was a poor implimentation of NDS.

MGMorden... it's a small world. I'm also in Clemson. You're right about it. Clemson University, last I heard (last year), had the largest Novell tree not only in the US, but in the entire world. It is pretty massive. As far as I'm concerned, it works dang well. Most of it is on NW5.

Either of you guys at Clemson University have any idea what they do the backups with? That seems to be the only thing that causes problems for our NetWare servers.

Nothinman, I manage a 1500+ node Netware 4.11 network. All of the Netware servers that I maintain run ARCServe 6.6. I have managed Netware since 3.12, and have used nothing except ARCServe IT. I did encounter a Netware server running Backup Exec, and did not like it a bit. ARCServe is great for managing and monitoring Netware Directory Services. That is just my opinion and may be biased since it is mainly all I have experience with.

The largest Netware Tree in the US and in the Word, for that matter is the US Postal service (250,000 nodes). I've had some personal experience with their network.

geesh!
We run way more than Clemson U...we have over 5000 nodes avaialable all over the world.
We are running LEgato instead of Arc, works well but can be a pain inthe ass, restores are fast as heck though!
