'Nother newbie Linux Q?

I am having trouble with the Internet connection on the Linux master box. It seems that it starts to download a page on the browser, or an email or whatever and then it slows down to zero, resets and then starts the transfer again! A friend came around and was able to illustrate the behaviour on the little inbuilt graphic monitor thingy.

This behaviour is also probably related to the high number of dropouts the connection has. There is no way that this performance is stable enough even for browsing let alone the pproxy. Any ideas?

HMMM....This could be a toughie. :Q

There could be a number of things with Linux through a modem.

First, I'll assume you're using the "Internet" icon on your desktop.
This is just a short cut to the "kppp" program that is also in your K System (like winblow$ start button) under "Networking"

Under the kppp setup screen, under "Device" what is your "Flow Control" set to? It should be "CRTSCTS".
"Line Termination" should be set to "CR/LF"
I don't know about the "Lock" button, but mine is checked and it works fine.

Now check your account settings.

IP Tab:
"Dynamic IP" should be checked.
DO NOT "Auto Configure Hostname".

DNS Tab:
Everything blank, except the "DNS IPs", (should be at least two, but you may just have one) they need to be the ones you use for your ISP.

GATEWAY Tab:
"Default Gateway" should be checked.
"Static Gateway" should show 0.0.0.0
And the "Assign Default Route to this Gateway" should be checked.

Other than these, I don't know.

Thanks as usual K. I am now on the net. The missing bit seemed to be that I had to add User id and password in the login script. This is confusing as it is PAP and the info is already in the connect box.

I still don't have a clear idea on some of the other things happening/not happening.

Next question, how do I get the client to fetch/flush as there is no drop down list with these alternatives as there is in the windows client?

You should be running the client in a terminal box, (easier to watch the output) just open another term box, change into the same dir as the client, and type: dnetc -update.

Sorry K but it just keeps saying:

It's kind of annoying. So far I managed to lose the 3000 blocks I had cracked in this machine and now it's got hundreds of randoms.

Clearly this is fun🙂 or otherwise I would be silly to persist......right?🙂

Well, that tells me you're running as &quot;Root&quot;. :Q < /have you met Russ?

You'll need to add the . / (spaced) before the executable IE: try ./dnetc -update, and I bet it solves one of your problems anyway.

😱 the root thing is/was to keep it simple.😱
I've been more concerned with getting the thing to work, crack blocks and act as a pproxy than act with propriety. I guess I'll try to be better in future.😱

I've managed to get the buff-in topped up again anyway. I take it then, whenever you give a console command from root, the ./ has to be there?

I do have another question (of course). Whenever I shut down the client and restart it, there seems to be a risk of losing the blocks already cracked. (Those 300 randoms just disappeared). I need to make sure that stops right now! It doesn't happen every time though. This machine has cost me about 5000 blocks in the last fortnight. The two drones sitting beside it are also not producing a thing. I've got to get these three going smoothly before I can build the rest of the cluster.

I'm now putting this one aside and I'll try to get the drones cracking on Klinux using a W98 machine as a pproxy. I've downloaded the pproxy and hooked into Heavyiron's pproxy to check on fetch and flush. It works!

I've pointed another W98 machine at it and now have it successfully fetching and flushing to the pproxy which then flushes to Heavyiron pp.

I am about to try and get one drone up on Klinux and have it start fetching and flushing from the Dantoo pproxy. Let you know! (any advice welcome of course).

Node 1 is Up!!😀 I had to go the netconfig route as the DHCP was timing out, but it wasn't too scary. You really have done an amazing job with Klinux - Take a huge bow!😀

I'd bring in Node 2 now, but I'm plumb out of cat 5 cables, miscounted somehow, but I'll rig something before bedtime.

Few more little problems.....🙁


The net connection on the pproxy is a dial up. I have it set to hold a couple of thousand blocks to feed the others while offline. The problem is that it refused to accept blocks from the drones when the maxkeys done level was exceeded and it appears that it therefore refused to feed blocks to the drones as well as the connections were refused.

I pushed up the maxkeys setting to see if this the cure.

I need the pproxy to feed new blocks (no more randoms) and then hold the blocks til a connection to the net is made.

The second problem is Klinux related. For some reason, the Klinux box requires a keyboard to be plugged in before it outputs to a monitor or sends and receives blocks?? Any ideas?? I want to be able to operate the nodes without any peripherals of course.

I don't know if this is the problem, but check your &quot;Process Management&quot; to see if you have more than one instance of proxyper running.
In Mandrake 7.0, I believe &quot;Process Management&quot; is under &quot;System Utilitiys&quot; or something like that,from your K Menu (start button).

This is a great little utility.
It'll tell you everything ruuning on you box.
It'll show you if you have more then one instance of a program trying to run at the same time.

Whenever you use the &quot;Archiver&quot; utility, check you process manager to make sure it shutdown properly.
If it doesn't, it'll hog about 50% of your CPU time, really cutting down on your RC5 keyrate.

Anyway, shut down your pproxy, and check &quot;Process Management&quot; to see if there is another proxyper running.
Do the same with the dnet client.
It's not hard to accidently have a dupe of a program running.

You'll need a Keyboard to log-in to Klinux, no way around that.
Once Klinux is running, you can pull the keyboard, and plug it back in even.
