Weak. :p

I've been to Utah a bunch of times. My uncle works for the Park Service at Zion. I rafted down the green river. I may be going out to Moab on a mountain biking trip next spring...

Why didn't you go into the Grand Canyon?

Not enough time. Had we been there for several days, we might have hiked down a ways.

You can't be below the canyon rim after sunset without a backcountry permit, which are limited, have to be applied for in advance and cost $$. There are a couple "quick" hikes just below the rim but you need a least 2-4 hours and some of them are fairly strenuous over rough terrain.

:Q

I threw a rock straight out from the edge, and it took about 10-11 seconds before we heard it hit the ground at the bottom. If anyone wants to calculate how high that is, you're welcome to. :)

490-592.9 meters using distance = initial velocity * time + 0.5 * acceleration * time^2.

This is assuming you just dropped the rock or threw the rock straight horizontally. And it's inital velocity equalling 0. Also using 9.8m/s^2 as the acceleration. And leaving out a whole bunch of other sh!t.

But hey, that's a pretty far fall regardless :)

You forgot about the amount of time the sound takes to get back to the person.
