BTW, I didn't just make this up, it is actually used, although it's not particularly widespread.

Or I can guess the second part (i.e., why it is named that) if the first part is wrong: It cost a lot to manufacture of all operating systems in history?

OS X was already guessed, and it has nothing to do with money :)

I'm actually going to guess that the x$ incorporates all operating systems, and that's why nobody can guess it. $ denotes a string, x being a variable or some such thing. So x$ in this context can be the name of any OS ever made EVAR.

That's almost hinting towards being more like the right concept, but no.

If it has the money sign ($) in it, it has to be a reference to MS somehow. I'd say it is Windows XP. I think putting the money sign in MS looks really stupid but there are a million people who do it.
