Notepad replacement utility

Notepad doesn't suit me. I was using a freeware text editor called Metapad. It allows me to launch URL's, choose my font, remain on top or not, my choice, some other nice options.

What text editor do you like in Windows?

Dunno. My needs weren't demanding, and Notepad++ was my first 3rd party replacement, and it did what I wanted, so I quit looking. Metapad looks like a nice package, but I haven't seen it mentioned before. FWIW, Notepad++ is probably the "standard" replacement people use, but that doesn't mean it's better. It may have just gotten traction earlier on. Both are free to try, so see which one suits your needs better. Both are libre software, so that's a big plus.
 
The most obvious advantage of Notepad ++ I see off the bat is the tabbed feature where you can evidently have multiple documents accessible in one window. Metapad doesn't do that. I've used Metapad for something like 10 years, maybe more. I especially like the URL launch support.

In my experience if you don't mind spending a little money you can't beat UltraEdit. I use it extensively at work. Notepad++ is a solid alternative and it's free but I think it's lacking in how it handles column mode and sorting. Ultraedit is like a Ginzu knife.

I am also using metapad so my suggestion is also for metapad because of the open source environment and faster one things.

It's quite expensive, but damn it can do a lot. I might look into this actually.

Hey. Real programmers use GVim. 😉

It has a steep learning curve, but since I'm over that I like it much better.

Edit: P.S. I tried UltraEdit once on a work computer. Its regular expressions are just totally different from everything else. Like Mac and PC different. I don't recommend it personally.
