they sure have. Notebooks today are really quick. For some people, it might be their desktop also. 😀

Wow thats cheap, I have a laptop at work, and I thought that was good.

Mine is
PIII700mhz
128mb RAM
18gb HD
10/100NIC
56kbps modem
6x dvd
15" TFT screen

and that one costs alot more than yours.

P3-850, 128+ ram, 20+ gig HDD..... I dont see how anyone but a drug dealer really needs that much mobile computing power.

They should at least come with docking stations in the box.

JEez god 1730? What brand?

I have a sony z505js = $2000 (refurb)
p3 650
128mb
12gb
12.1"tft 1024x768
very very thin and very very light.

Woah, that's a good price for a notebook. Yeah the notebooks are getting more powerful and today's apps really don't need that much computing power. But no notebook is gonna beat my dual 19" monitor setup with klipsch speakers in terms of multimedia enjoyment!! not now anyway, maybe when they start producing those LCDs that is like a pair of eye glasses and you can wear them, loptops will be lot more mobile and with lots of viewing space.

Winbooks are cheap because they are such a pain to deal with. We ordered some for work (against my wishes) and out of 8, 3 didn't work out of the box and another 2 had to be sent back after a month or two. Never again.

Hardware, are you happy with your Radeon in your Athlon system?

I am happy with my Gateway Solo 9300XL (PIII 600, 288MB SDRAM, 15.7"TFT)

Sure, they can have lots of features, but after working with laptops for a while, I know how flakey they are. They aren't stable at all, the hardware features take lots of screwing around to get working, and PCMCIA is just downright messed. They're fun to have, but they'll never replace my desktop.

Tried it today!
config was ok (dma etc)
well I got it with win me
as usual i fdisk it and win2000 is the way to go
maybe i can oc it and get 1g from it dunno?

is there a way to check if my piii-800 (ss) is a cc0?

Humm, are you sure it is brand new? I find it hard to believe that a "supermarket" (grocery store) sells laptops at that price. Is it a "generic" or brand name? Did it come with a coupon for food products? 😛

You still havn't told us what brand you bought😛 Anyways, big name laptops use cartridge based cpus, so i dunno if u can check if its stepping. Even if you could, i doubt there is enough cooling for o/c to be wise. Cheapo generic laptops sometimes use desktop chips though.

As for your poor lcd, thats a bummer. Companies all have an allowable amount of dead pixels.. so unless you are past their limit, you get to live with it. I think sony's limit is up to 9 pixels or something, very disturbing🙁
